ODD CHARACTER WAS MAN OF UNIQUE BIRTH he tied two cotton bales together and floated on them as on a raft. It would be impossible to link at times very wary of telling too much of his past although there never seemed a reason why he his experiences together in a con-, nccted story of his life for he was should keep some of it secret.1 Many folks knew him for through two generations he had been pointed out to Shelby children as an odd character. Episodes in his life here were many. Had Enough Prayer. Once, according to the stories centered around him, friends, un dertook to take him tei a big meet ing. One friend wanted him to go so that those at the revival could pray for him. George wouldn’t go. I His answer was that “more folks are praying for me than live in Shelby.” His explanation for that was that at one time during his wander ing he drifted into the old Bowery Mission of New York, a world famed spot in that day. During his time there a minister asked all of those who wanted 10,000 people to pray for them during their lives to stand up. George stood up, and to his way of thinking “If the prayers of 10,000 people cannot save me, why have any more pray?” In,later years Estellc^was not as much of a character about Shelby. Generations had passed since the day when the mixed threads of his life story were fresh and in later years when ho came to Shelby he was fond of taking a bench by himself on the court square, and there he remained for hours at a time, perhaps musing over a past of reminiscences that few men have had. Friends, and the curious often chatted with him during these hours on the court square, but usu ally the topic of conversation was of cotton, or some farm crop and seldom it was in the last years that he talked much of his past. The funeral services for the uni que character were conducted last Wednesday morning by Rev. H. E. Waldrop .The deceased is survived by his wife and son in this county and several brothers in the far west.. Just how many brothers he has living is not known, but in the past he told acquaintances of nine brothers and one sister, the sister being a resident of Kansas City, and the brothers living in the northwest. 21 Couples Get Married In Month | — i Rush Prior to Christmas Seems to Have Abated at Register of Deeds Office. So far this month 21 couples have j received license to marry in this I county, and the number does not 1 include those who sought a favor-j ite Gretna Green in South Carolina. However, Register A. F. Newton | says that the rush prior to Christ- ' 1 mas cannot be noted now. “They’ve | slacked up some how or another: i since Christmas,” says the regis- j ter. Up through Christmas the new j register enjoyed the reputation of having issued a marriage license for practically every day he had been in office. Four couples have secured li cense since the Friday’s issue of the last Star. Accuses Mexico. Managua, Nicaragua.—President j Adolfo Diaz of Nicaragua recently j issued a manifesto in which he re newed his accusations that the I Mexican government is actively sup ^ porting the present Liberal revo- ; lutionary movement in his country ^ and charges that Mexico is row ; fitting out an expedition to aid I the Liberals in Nicaragua.
