- jhelby Sidelights - -By Renn Dram SOME OF THESE SHELBY who believe in this Lincoln county faith healer ought to take the cotton price down and see what ,he can do with it. SCIENCE IS GETTING TOO rmart for us. Some of these days they’ll have us believing it will not do any good to closs our fingers when a black cat crosses the road. They’re exploding all our myths and beliefs. JUST A FEW WEEKS BACK government weather experts came along; and told us that planting or .„,wing anything by certain sea sons of tbe moon was all bunkum; and that cutting wood or such-like hy the changes of the planet Lur.n was all tomfoolery. That created quite a row. Anybody that know? the farmers of North Carolina will agree to that. Over to the sheriff’s office a bunch o£ old-timer?, and a few younger cr.es, got to discussing the report. Several fellows, among them John Eskridge and Sheriff Lt - can, disclaimed the fact that they over had gore by the moon in doing such things ar.d that they always knew there was nothing to it. Se - eral other old fellow's set by and said nothing, which was to sav that the next wood they cut wdll be by the right moon. And out on the farms more folks will stick to the moon than the weather experts for ,-everal generations of fathers and mothers have passed down <he ad vice about the moon, while very few ever sw'ore by the weather ex perts. So, sooner or later the scien tists may have us “top tearing the corners off two dollar bills. ANOTHER FAMOUS WEATH er foreaster comes along and tells us that it does snow as much as it ever did. That seems hard to be lieve. Stop the next man you meet on the street and he’ll tell you that it doesn’t seem like it snows a:; much these days. The weather fore caster had two reasons for his theory. First, he said those who think it is not snowing as much are pierely getting older and are net uanusea enough over it to notice the fact. Second, he says the auto mobiles keep it from staying on the ground as long. That’s a bright one for you. Automobiles beat down the enow and the dirt accumulated in the atmosphere above a busy world mixes with the flakes and makes them fail faster. Perhaps he’s right for wasn’t ii only two summers ago that the col ored folks told oi an angel alight ing on Chimney Rock and singing ‘it Aint Gonna Rain No More”? THE THIRD MYTH .EXPLODED for us that Tom Ediso docs sleep more than four h.oui'3 per night. A lot of young folks have been get ing consolation out of the story that Edison says no more Heap is needed. Now a doctor comes along and says when Edison doesn’t sleep eight hours at night he nods at his desk next day. So we’ll have to go back to old Ben Franklin and his "early to bed” stuff. AH of which, as we say, tends to ishow that some of these days we SALE DELUXE CAFE BY TRUSTEES. Under ar.d by virtue of my ap pointment as trustee in the above deed of assignment, and the powers I contained therein. I will receive bids on the stock.and fixtures of the Deluxe Cafe, as a whole, or a part thereof, with or without lease. All claims should be made out pon the regular bankruptcy form, roperly verified, and filed with the rdersigned referee. This the 29th day of December, )2«. JOHN M. ROBINSON, Referee, may be told to consider 18 a lucky number. DON’T BE SURPRISED ONE of these days if you go by Mc Neely’s and Kelly’s and see some, loud red or green knit underwear on the clothing dummy in the dis play windows. The Association of Knit Underwear manufacturers promises that the new styles in un de: wear will be louder than the red flannels of olden days. A READER SAYS THAT THE committee which picked the best | five needs in the Star contests must have been made up young men. His reason was that the list suggesting longer dresses and older school j teachers was not among the v. in-1 ners. MANY FOLKS IN SHELBY have read ‘ Mighty Lak a Rose,” the j masterpiece of Frank L. Stanton, j poet laureate of Georgia and pne | of the South’s best known poets. It j was Stanton that also wrote “I.i’l Feller’ ’and “Just A-wearin’ lor You.” Those who have read hia masterpiece will hear with regret; that Stanton died last Friday and left a world he brightened up for thousands. In coming centuries however Stanton will be remember ed by this, if no more: Tiiis world that we’re a livin’ in Ti? mighty hard to beat; Y'ou git a thorn for every rose, But ain't the roses sweet. TIMES MAY BE HARD AND IT may cost a lot to live but just take a walk around to the undertaker’s place and find out what it costs- to die. IF THAT FAILS TO CHEER you up we had better stop worrying you.
