Says Cotton Seed Have High Value Mr. J. Frank Jenkins, manager of the Shelby plan tof the Southern Cotton oil, writes the following in forming letter to The Star concern | ing the value of cotton seed per acre of land. I have read with interest the ar ticle in The Star of the ICth, ‘’Farm Crops of This County in Value in 11126.” Under per acre value of these crops, I notice cotton estimated yield lint per acre, UK) pounds, value 11.7 or $33,161 per acre. This does not show the seed value which seems to me should ! be figured in the value of fhe cot j ton crop per acre or total value for i the county. Since there are two j times as much seed as lint per acre, this would make 580 pounds of seed per acre yield or 19 1-2 bushels per acre average price -.ire paid for seed whole season 12 cents per bushel would make an additional of $8.12 per acre added to the 33.96 or total value of cotton crop per acre $42.08 Since there were 65,645 acres in cot ton and 580 pounds of seed per acre or a total of 19,031 tons valued at $2o.0U per ton pr a total value lor the county of $533,036.00, which added to the lint value for county, would make a total for crops of $3. 236,200, would make a grand total of $3,759,236 or over half million dollars than your estimate shows for all crops in the county. Nov; the value of the cotton crop only was figured at $2,227,335 and add the seed $533,036. makes a total for the cotton crop of $2,760,371. You will note also that the cotton seed values run nearly as high as the corn crop since the total value Announcements FOR MAYOR. FOR MAYOR. Now pound for pound, you will find that seed are selling more per pound than corn since there are 56 cents per bushel, or pound value of $1.18 cents per pound, whereas cot ton seed weighs 30 pounds to the bushel and value 42 cents per bushel or per pound value of $1.40., Bushel per acre corn yield was 21 1 bushels, whereas seed yields 19 1-2 bushels per acre, or 1 2-.'! more per acre than cotton seed. Farmers can raise nearly ns much or more cotton seed per acre than corn, and some years the seed will bring more than corn. If farmers woftld learn the value of their cotton see 1 meal and hulls for mules and horses and feed it in the right proportion, they would soon find their cotton seed crop worth more than their corn crop, acre for acre.
