Miss Jessie Lee Whiteside of Bethany school faculty spent the week end here with Mrs. J. K. Willis. A surprise dinner, was given Mrs Bailie Ilambr'ght, Sunday by her children in celebration of her 78th birthday anniversary at her home on South Railroad avenue. The guests were Invited into the dining room where they were serv ed dinner picnic style with the ex ception of Mrs. Ilambright who was seated at the head of the table. The birthday cake occupied the cer ter. The figures 78 were formed on the cake with pink lighted candles. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Ilambright and children. W. R. Ilambright and R. E. Ham liright of Grover, Mr. and Mrs. G. D Ilambright and children, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Ilambright and Mr. and Mrs. Wade Feiruson and chil dren of York, S. C. Mrs. Ilambright has eight children and 13 grand children. The U. D. C. was delightfully en tertained last Friday afternoon at 3:30 at the home of Mrs. W. A. Ridonhour . The home was at tractively arranged with baskets or gay colored spring flowers and pot ted plants. Mrs. B. F. Ormond, chairman of the program committee , was in charge of the program. De votional exercise was conducted by Mrs. Helen Hay and the program was rendered as follows: Song ‘Dix ie” by all. A reading “The Thin Grey Line’ by Mrs. Sallie Mae Lohr Allen. Instrumental solo “Love’s Dream,” by Liszt by Mrs. J. E. Herndon. A reading by Mrs. O. B. Carpenter. Poem “Memorial Day” was rend by Mrs. D. C. Mauney. At the conclusion of the program a short business meeting was held. Work was assigned to each member for memorial day. Two new names were added to the roll Mrs. C. E. . CarpeYiter and Mrs. P. G. Senate S’wp Closes Washington.—The Senate talk ed itself out of its regular eating place in th* filibuster which killed bills of supply emergency appro priations for other branches of ''•the government. There were over a hundred to hear his sermon. Rev. Mr. Fitzgerald filled his pulpit Sunday afternoon at Kadesii. He had a wonderful congregation our to hear him. Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Jeffries of Lincolnton visited his mother, Mrs. R. C. Johnson Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George Martin and r-'tniiv visited Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Gantt Sunday. Miss Gorinne Hoyle spent last Tuesday night with Miss Pauline Dixon. Misses Elva and Lucy Richards were the guests of Misses Lucy Lura and Zella Willis last Sunday. Misses Rosemary Peeler and Pauline Dixon spent Thursday night with Miss Ruth Tillman. Miss Fay Gantt spent Saturday night with Miss Lucy Willis. Double Shoals, Mar. 28.—A large number of our folks attended the commencement sermon at Latti more last Sunday afternoon. It was a wonderful message full of advice to the graduates as well as to ev eryone. Everything is astir this week trying to work and go tc commencement. About one-third of the young men and women of the graduating class are ours. Wj hope they do not stop here but go right on. This cool spell has checked the gardening and planting to some ex tent. It might be wise to wait jurt a little longer anyway, we cannot tell when Mr. Winter will make us I a visit. Farmers of this section are busy hauling fertilizer. They expect to have it ready when it does get warm enough to plant. Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Putnam' and three children spent the day Sunday with Mrs. Putnam’s par- I ents Mr. and Mrs. J. L. McSwain. A. V. Washburn jr., spent the week end here with his grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wash burn. Mr. C. A. Hamrick is not quite as well. He has not been able to be out for some time. Y.—A verdict of $767,865.17 was won by the stockholders of the Geneva Nat ional bank in their suit for $1,500, 000 against officers and directors charged with negligence in the management of the bank.
