Crops Looking Fine—School To Open 8th—-Picnic by Double Sprint; Adult Dept. (Special to Tlie Star.) I.af.imore, July 25.— Farmers in ■ this \icinity are greatly encour aged, because of the flowing . prospects of rne of the largest '• crops of both corn and cotton ever rai ed in this community. Crops are about laid by and ary general- i ly in fine condition. Our school under the proficient management of our principal Prof. Lawton Blanton will begin its 1927-28 session on Monday, Aug ust 8th. A fine corps of teachers has been selected and everyone is ] looking forward to one of the most prosperous years in our school history. i ru\ amg‘.ng scnool in progress 1 <u the Baptist church under the direction of Prof. .1. A. Ruebush of , Dayton, Va., is progressing satis factorily. Interest and attendance i seem to be growing daily. On last Saturday afternoon it j was our privilege to a •.fend one of the most delightful and enjoyable Teenies of this day and time, given by Hie adult department of the' Double Springs Sunday school of which Mr. YV. A. Crowder is prei dent. An interesting address was. made by Prof. Ruebush on the great advantage to be derived in maintaining rural churches. This j was followed by an address by ■ Mr. O. M. Mull, of Shelby, on the importance of adults attending Sunday school. Another important feature of the occasion vtfas the delightful musie rendered by the famous . Baltimore quartet, consist ing of Mr. Gideon Price, Messrs.! Monrot a.’-d sons, and Hulsey and son, with Miss Alice I’oteet at the piano. And last but not least, the program being completed, the crowd repaired to a point near the fine double springs where a long table had been, erected and which > had just been laden from end to end, by the good ladies of the church with the most- bountiful supply of precious delicacies that j. has ever been our lot to behold. [ What we did then, it is not neccs-1 sary to say. We commend the Dou ble Springs people on their great hospitality and generosity. Glad to noie that Miss Edna Mae Brooks, who has been quite sick is reported much better. Mr. Julian Deberry, a trestle foreman on the Seaboard has been at home on a ten day’s vacation. , Mr. Gilmer Callahan, cf Char lotte, who has been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Calln- 1 ban returned home Sunday after- I noon. Rev. J. W. Needham, of Polk- ' ville preached in the school audi torium last evening. Mr. S. Cabaniss who resides on Shelby street has sold his resi dence io Mrs. W. T. Cotton and in j the near future will move to his j farm in the Cabaniss community. [ Raleigh.—The Needleman mutila tion case of 1925 returned to the! public spot light this week when a Copy of petition of Jospeh H. j Needleman, Philadelphia, asking $100,000 damages \ for mutilation * of his person by a masked mob was received at the office of Unit-( ed States Marshall Ward here. 1 The petition has just been filed in United States District, Court at Washington. N. C., under jurisdie- r tion of the Eastern Federal District 1 of North Carolina. Needleman is suing for $75,900 compensatory damages and *25,0fln punitive damages against 22 per sons of Martin County, three of I.c- i noil- and two of Wayne County. j Prison punishment and fines weie | ipeted out to 28 persons following j trial for mutilation and convie. ! tion at the May special term Mar- i tit! County in 1925. The petition iust filed calls for answer from those against whom warrants are being issued by the District Court clerk at Washington where the trial will be hold. The answers are due within twenty davs. Needleman. two years ago was freed of attacking Ethel Griffin, of Martin. He was arrested March i 26, 1925. in Edenton, N. C., taken : front jail and his person mutilated. ; Needleman brings suit as a pau- 1 per and brings it i,-» federal court j .bv reason of being a non resident of citizenship of the 28 defendants The coolest fabrics are those which allow the most ranid pas sage of ah' and perspiration vanor through them.
