Air RIDDLE CELE1I1ES1I SUM EBT Hundreds Of Descendants Call To Hay Respects To State’s Oldest Woman. narnardsville.—Like a little child happy and trembling with excite ment, “Cranny” Rachel Riddle cele Lvat«.*l her 108th birthday here Tue day of this week. Slie was up earlier than usual to prrPt in person more than 400 de fendants and close friends, some of whom had come more than a hundred miles to do honor to the oldest woman in the state. At the home of her son-in-law, W. M. Fox, she watched with joy ou, interest the buzz and bustle about her, as loving hands prepar ed a feast such as has seldom been ffcn around Barnardsville, caring tenderly for her the while; stop ping, to-tuck a pillow a bit more closely about her, straighten a wisp of straying hair, or whisper a hap py word. She was Harnardsyille’s queen for a day, and right royally did her neighbors and kinsmen serve her. It was ns if the gladness and the tenderness of her own people, in whose veins flowed younger blood, had rolled back the heavy Rcroll of years a century, and left her a girl of eight again. With her six children gathered about her, she hummed again the old tune she had been preparing for two days to sing to her guests. It was the only contribution except her inspiring presence she had hoped to make to the party, and she had been fearful that she would be unable to carry the tune when the time came. “Sometimes I can sing it and' then again I can’t,” she said rue fully. Rut she was determined, and those who gathered early heard a1 song such as they had never listen ed to before. In a cracked voice, interrupted occasionally by a hacking catch in her throat which has been bother ing her for two weeks or more, but encouraged by her children, the un certain tune but clear words came: “Come my loving fathers and * survey reveals almost 3,500 languages and dialects in the woild, of which more than half are in America.
