Today’s White Lies Help Bad Children Today's parents, who throw up their hands hopelessly, aghast and bewildered by the disregard’ of law among their sons and daugh-j ters, can find a sound explanation for the situation in their own I petty dishonesties. This is the accusation hurled at the older generation by Anne Shan non Monroe, the writer, presenting in .August Good Housekeeping the results of her study »n tne devel opment of dishonest traits among children. Here are some of the people who she says, sow the seeds of exam ple which are hearing fruit in youthful hold-ups, shootings, thefts and other crimes: The mother who tells “white lies’’ and who has herself report ed “not at home” when she wishes to avoid a borcsome visitor or other tiresome obligations. The mother who “forgets” to re turn cooking materials, stamps, car fare and other little things bor-’ rowed from neighbors and friends.1 The father who trims the edges of honesty in his business deal inn's. ! “The boy of today who cuts red tape .and . goes directly to the tills to steal is only a little farther Hong the road than his father, or some' other equally well-stationed boy’s father, who looted a trust tie d, m- his grandfather who sold fnke mining stock, or his great ern ml father who accepted a friend’s endorsement of hvs note when he krc«” that he was insolvent. “Mnn'-y tnrrnwpi. from 1 rela tive or friend. whii\ wo think (loos not have to hr ret irned.” the ar t ivto points out., is one of +he sur est' means of cultivating-a dis honest family sffiin. “A certain mother comes to my mind " “ays the writer. “She ntor C aged her home to send ht-T daughter to college on the under standing that the daughter would teach school and pay off the deb'. But the- first year's earntngs the daughter went to Europe; with the second she took a post-graduate course; with the thivd she got married; .with the fourth she bur ied (he mother who hail worked and worried herself Into her grave, trying to save the home.
