Survey of 22 Cities in the South East Shows No Set Price Anywhere (Lenoir News-Topic) Gnscline prices in a number of towns and cities in Western North Carolina. including Lenoir, have developed into quite a subject dur ing the past few weeks Automo bile owners are wopdering why it is they have to pay anywhere from one to five cents a gallon more than other places or sections of tho South. At only two other cities. Chattanooga and Knoxville, is the price more than it is in this sec tion. Facts regarding the selling price of gasoline in 22 cities were gath ered last week. The figures show th^t the average price from these 22 points is 17 1-2 cents. In Lenoir and in this section it is 19 cents, exclusive of the 4 cents per gallon tax. A survey of gasoline prices reveals the following range in the principal cities of the South. > (Tax is not in cluded.) : Atlanta . .....12c Durham ..18c Memphis, Tenn. _15-16 l-2c New Orleans. La _15 l-2e Mobile, Ala. _ 16c Lexington. Ky. _ ..16c Jacksonville, Fla. _ 16c Jackson, Miss.__.16c Richmond. Va... _. 17c Birmingham, Ala. ......._17c Montgomery. Ala. . 17c Macon. C. __ Chattanooga, Tenn. . Knoxville, Tenn, __ No explanation for gasoline in Lenoir and Western North Carolina can apparently be made. The arguments that cheap er transportation sets the price fails when it is shown that the price in Savannah, 15 cents and Neve Orleans. 15 1-2 cents, is prac tically the same as the 16-cents price in Raleigh and Lexington., Ky.. neither of which cities has water route transportation. Nor can it be shown that the size cf the city, through quantity of consumption, regulates the price. The Raleigh and Lexington prices are a cent lower than that Of Birmingham and only a half cent higher than in New Orleans. State boundaries apparently have no weight. There is three cents difference between the price in Asheville and Raleigh, and a cent and a half between Knoxville and Memphis. Texas and Oklahoma, both oil producing states, were not includ ed in the list. In Memphis ail gas oline sells for 15 cents except Standard, which brings 16 1-2 cents.
