SHE. EX-mt MIES GOOD COPY Tuuney Proves More 'Newsy' Sinre Ills Krtlrrmrnt As Heavy Champion / _ (By NORMAN K. HKOW.., It begins to look as though this Q(*nr Tunney—you remember him as h 'av^weight chumpion—is go ing to be better “copy" as an "ex" than as an active ring figure. Scarcely a day goes by but what someone doesn't shed new light on his carreer, his eccentricities and probable future. Along comes one story that a ham and egg sparring partner knocked him plumb goofey in an informal R^Ato at Spectacular, N. Y., while training for his battle with Jack Demps-y last September It seems the partner butted Oene over the eye with his head and then slammed one to the stalwart onvs jaw, which: sent Gene into a semi dazed condition from which he didn't recover for days. Now not a word of such a calani • ity was breath"d at the time. This drtplte the fact that his camp swarmed with sport writers, most of whom know good copy when they see or hear of it. This, also despite the fact that the gentleman wno smack-'d Mr Tunney for a row of incoherent mutterings on the rela tive merits of Shakespeare and Nick Hurte: would be very apt to talk about the matter. It seem?; th? two blows were severe enough in their results to prompt Tunney to plan an early retirement from the ring. In fact he is quoted an saying that he hadn't fully recov ered when he met Dempsey—that one of the pokes Dempsey took at hi head in the seventh round final ly cleared his b ain We'll tell tiie world those punches; must have cleared it if there were any clouds floating about. Cleveland Oil Co. Distributors i world agrees that Mr. Tunney did some rapid thinking about that time., Planned a whole 1 500-meter run which kept him out of Jack's way | the rest of the round. And then the tip comes out that Tunney iS going to become a New York banker when he returns from ' his bunion building outing with Thornton Wilder. He's going to take a daily work out with bonds, interest, accurals, debentures, loans and whatever else comes the way of a bank presided If Gene Tunney ever does enter one of those nice mahogany confer ence rings in a secluded corner of a marble warehouse, it'll take more than an introduction from Tex Rick ard or Billy Gibson to float a loan on an open-air fight. HIGH COST OF BKIDKS STIRS SYRIAN YOUTHS Damascus. Syria.—The high price of brides is beginning to worry young and marriageable men in the 1 east. A mass meeting held here re i cently elected a committee to seek ! a modification of the custom requir i lng the man who would marry to pay over a handsome sum of mcrmv to the father of the girl of his* choice. The western custom is more to the liking of the eastern swain. The men working for the reform say that they ar-1 not impelled by selfish motives, but are interested l in the welfare of the state; mar i riages, they say, are on the de i crease owing to the greed of parents who have been raising prices in the marriage markets. Keep ’Em At Home, And Strap ’Em Too (Franklin Press * Now we have the case of a Macon county girl who is only seventeen years of age charging two men with a serious crime against her. The evidence in the preliminary trial brought out the fact that the girl had been in the habit of taking rides with boys and men. After the inevitable happen'd a warrant ior the arrest of the two mm wav served. Whether or not the men ar rested are guilty of the crime as charged v.ill be determined by a jury. But whether guilty or not guilty the reputation of the girl ruined forever. Day after day the news columns of the papers con tain accounts of similar cases and only an all-wise Creator knows the number of such cases that are kept out of the papers. After all is said th-‘ blame must rest mostly upon the shoulders of the parents of such girls.’ When young girls who have not reached the age of mature Judg ment are permitted to ride the highways and by-ways with men who are almost strangers, parents may expect the worst to happen. In this unfortunate Macon coun ty case we are also inclined to be lieve that the state is not ntireiy free of guilt. In the cross examina tion of the girl she was unable to understand ordinary English. Did she learn anything in school of sex relations or is the state still too squeamish to teach matters of this kind? Did her parents and the oifi cers ol me county see that this un fortunate girl attended school dur ing the years that the law requires? What of the state department < f welfare? Is it doing its duty in Maccn county? There are many questions of this kind to be consid ered. but after all. straps properly administered by parents to boys and STOMACH OUT OF FIX?
