Bost Letter Has
State’s Sympathy
For Tragedy Here
Letter Of Condolence Forwarded To
Max Gardner By Raleigh
Writer
! Among the many letters of sym
pathy and condolence that came to
O. Max Gardner, owner of one of
the collapsed buildings, and oth
ers. was the following beautifully
expressed sentiment of Tom Bost,
veteran political writer of Raleigh
and a close friend of Gardner:
"All things in our normal lives
shrink to insignificance in the pres
ence of so stark a tragedy as that
which has overcome your beauti
ful town and its lovely people. I
am heartened in contemplating it I
by the consciousness that if it has
carried of fthe lives of such splen
did people as died in the despotism
of their duties, it left others who
will accept such a dispensation with
courage and show that difficult
patience with God which is at once
the very alphabet of religion.
Praises Shelby
"I know that great as your ma
terial losses have been, the dram
on your good heart has been the
greatest. Shelby seems to me to be
the richest of our cities in the at- 1
fection which it gives to its own
sons and daughters. I often have
had occasion to remark that it has
no citizens who are jealous of then
leaders. In that way it seems to
me to be in truth a city that is “set
upon a hill, whose light cannot be
hid." Being to love deeply I know i
it grieves with intensity, but Shelby i
more easily than its neighbors re- '
ceives its ministry of pain, and
even in a wreckage, well-nigh com
plete and irremediable, there will
be found the germs of an immortal
hope."
