GROW CUES IN PRISON CELL Bank Bobber Interests Other In mates Of Michigan Bastile In Aviary. Marquette, Mich.—The Michigan penitentiary here lias become a huge aviary, for many of the "birds” in the state’s big "cage" have'cages in their cells and keep canaries and other birds lor company. The little yellow canary is more than a singer—it has personality, according to Jud Mehrige, one of the prisoners, who has worked up a thrifty business as a canary breeder during his prison tetm. He iias had ample time to study his pets, for he has lived m the same “room” w'ith them for years. Mehrige came to the prison here but a short time pfter he went to Grand Bapids from New York. He was a taxi driver and ‘ got mixed up in a bank robbery.” For the error he was sent to Marquette, where he had no friends. When not working time hung heavy on his hands, and he had nothing to do but think “I'm in prison.” Cheered By His Friends. However, he soon acquired one bird. It helped to cheer him up and take his mind off his loneliness. The two became fast friends. As soon as he awakened in the morning he heard of a cheery chirp, and until he went to his prison labor the two chatted back and forth. Mehridge soon realized that al though “Dickey” was happy he was lonesome, too. Out of his savings Mehrige bought a mate for his bird. It was not long before tile two birds had built a nest and the mother bird was sitting on tiny eggs. Soon the young hatched. What to do •with them puzzled the owner. He did not want to part with them. He kept them until further increases in the bird population of his shrdlun him to get rid of some. The birds had been a comfort to him; they would be to someone else. Salesmanship can be practicted in prison as well as in the most up-to date store, so Mehrige employed it to his advantage. Stars Selling Surplus. Some newcomers arrived. Mehrige had too many birds and offered to have the new’ prison arrival; take care of a bird for a while. He gave him a few instructions as to feed and water and the bird's bath. Usu ally the prisoner didn't want the bird, but persuasion won, and he took the little cage with its occu pant to please Mehrige. That was what the salesman wanted. He knew he had made one sale and was almost certain of another. As Mehrige had discovered,' the latest bird fancier saw that his bird needed a mate and went to his friend for another. He, too, started raising canaries. Sometimes the two birds were all the inmate wanted. Sales were made frequently to per sons “outside.” The majority of birds in Marquette homes today were raised by prison inmates, pur chased from the prisoner either through friends or through the prison store. Hickory, Oct. 9— An appeal for the support of the entire Demoera . tic ticket on account of the issues involved in the present campaign, was made here tonight by Capt. Peyton McSwain. elector for the ninth congressional district, who spoke before a large audience in the Highland graded school. Mr. McSwain declared that the principles involved in this fight are : vital to the American public,, they are as important as those in the first great political battle Of this na tion between. Jcflerscin and Hamil ton. , Touching on Smith's church af filiation. Mr. McSwain referred to the constitution of the United States, which guarantees religious freedom to every one and says no religious test shall ever be required as a test or qualification for office in this nation. And the speaker i further declared that no one could vote against Smith simply because of his church affiliation without | violating the constitution. Governor Smith stands squarely on the Democratic platform for re stricted immigration, the speaker said, declaring that he stated this in his acceptance speech and again in Milwaukee a few nights ago. "This stuff about Gov. Smith fav oring the opening of the flood gates i of immigration is all bunk and nothing but Republican propa ganda.';' c :aiming tnat ne was not raising the race issue. Mr. McSwam refer red to it by saying that Republicans had circulated a false report that Governor Smith had appointed ne groes to office in New York. “When the truth of the matter is the only negro ever appointed by the Demo cratic nominee to any kind of office was a messenger boy at the state house in Albany." “It does not lie in the mouth of any Republican," the speaker de clared “to raise the race issue or talk about appointing negroes to of fice. I am not going to discuss the record of the Republican party during Russel's administration, but am going to discuss what happened in 1928. No ancient history about that. At the Kansas City convention a negro by the name of John R. Hawkins was called to the platform and he made a speech seconding the nomination of Mr. Hoover as can didate for the presidency. In that convention there were fifty negro Republican delegates and they were all for Mr. Hoover. This fact to gether with the fact that Hoover abolished the segregation order in I his office at Washington, ought to be sufficient to make any Demo crat stop and think before he de serts his party to support a man ! like Hoover.” FOOTWEAR TO COMPLETE THE ENSEMBLE Soft Patent — Brown Kid — Burgundy Kid — Black Suede — Brown Suede — Black Velvet -— AAA to E — 210 to 9 FOOTWEAR that is admitted to be the vogue of the season; Footwear that not only is modish, but comfort able as well—-here’s the Store that is ready to outfit you in the finer Footwear at prices that are examples of real value.
