Don’t Be Frightened About Pone Costs Bills Sent Out By Company Coyer Toll To January lfi. New System. Many local people who received their telephone bills by mall last week perhaps laid them down aft er a glance with exclamations not hardly fit to appear In print. However, an examination of the bill revealed, or would have re vealed, that a new system of bill ing Is merely being installed. If your bill was higher than it was last month it was solely because the bill last week was for a month and one-half instead of one month. Hereafter bills will be sent out at mid-month and to get the billing straight the regular charges in last week’s bill were for December and for January through the 15th. Mr. Jonas’ Error And White-Haired Gentleman Is Hit Hickory Record. When Congressman-elect Chas. A. Jonas stated in Greensboro that the Republicans would contest the election of Major Stedman to the fifth district he put himself in a position to be hammered rather heavily by the press of the state. Mr. Harden, who opposed Major Stedman, withdrew his charges and the public was led to believe that the affair was over. Nobody wants to see a man cheated out. of office but Mr. Jonas gave nothing but vague statements in 'Greens ; boro and public sentiment is more than apt to support the aged vet eran who is regarded throughout, the nation as the last of the Ro mans. If 3VTr. Jonas has definite- and tangible charges to make he should present them in the proper man ner without any ballyhoo, but for him to air his suspicions in the manner that he did in Greensboro last Saturday was an error in tact which will do him no good. The attitude which he has taken is probably best summed up by The Raleign Timet which is never i sentimental, as follows: “We cannot imagine that even a partisan committee, of the house will attempt seriously to connect j him with fraud. Major Stedman. is one of the Romans. His white head never got a blow except as he held it up in honor. Not, on’y in North Carolina but in Washington he is' held in an affection that is not go ing to be remotely patient with any such attempted revival ol poll-, tical mopping-up tactics. As for Mr. j Harden, lie may be an entirely es timable gentleman. He may, lor all J we know, be better qualified tech nically to represent his district than is Major Stedman. It is even pos sible that it we could go into all the details of the voting it might be shown that perhaps Mr. Harden was the nominee, and not Major Stedman, as the returns indicate “All that aside, it is. odds of an hundred to one that Major 8ted man, who has spent a lifetime in fighting fairly, ran into no moral debacle in his old age. Whoever geriously attempts to unseat him can count upon a tremendous crop per.’’ Try Star Job Printing MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY T. W. HAMRICK CO. JEWELERS & OPTOMETRISTS.
