COPELAND, M. D. f (United States Senator And Former Health Commissioner of Now fork.) Not long ag6 I talked with a friend of mine in Washington. He told me a remarkable thing. Tills man has so trained himself that, any time he wills, he can shut his eyes and lapse into absolute unconscious ness. OK. Lw'tiAM). Tills Is almost an unheard of gift. It means everything to its possessor. No matter how I strenuous may be hts day, nor how tumultuous I his life, he can give himself two minutes of i absolute relaxation whenever he feels its need. , You and I may not be able to gain such con 1' trol over our faculties as this. It is our own lauit, however, if we do not learn how to rest, k The other day I talked to you about diversion. P a . complete change for a day or a week or longer. |j That is not the thing I am talking about now. 1 What I want to impress on you now is that out " of each and every 24 hours there should be at least 8 hours,, and even 10 hours, of complete relaxation. i have no patience with those strenuous people who say they can get along with four or five hours of sleep. They seem to think that un less you work 15 or 18 hours a day you are lazy. These smug Individuals imagine themselves as tremendous producers because they spend twice as much time at work as the average man does. It is all nonsense. I venture to say that the average individual who applies himself con cientiously to his duties for six or eight hours a day will accomplish twice as much work in the long run as the man who works 14 or 15 hours every day. The human brain and the human heart and the human kidneys and the human stomach and the human muscles vill not tolerate for ever and ever the wicked strain of exces sive hours of work. Nature is exceedingly kind and long suffering. Nature will accept an occasional period of over-strcnu ous effort. But it is just as sure as death and taxes that Nature will not continue to smile at the man or woman who foolishly and wickedly exhausts body and mind. 1 beg of you to order your life in such a way as to have regular per iods of relaxation. Even though you do not sleep take the tension off your muscles and the strain off your mind. Answers To Health Queries. A. B. Q— Is there a condition known as infection of the gall-blad der? A,-—Yes. Such a condition would be apt to affect the system in gen eral, Have j'our doctor prescribe after careful examination, including an X-ray of the gall duct. R Z. Q.—What would you ad vise for a drowsy feeling and an ache in the back of the neck? A.—It is possible that you are troubled with auto - mtoxication caused by some infection in your system. For full particulars send aj self-addressed, stamped envelope and repeat your question. L. F. Q How can 1 reduce? What Will reduce the legs? 2.—Can superfi 'ops hair be re moved by other than the electric t needle and must the work be done by a doctor? A - Restricting your diet in regard to sweets and stftrches ’ and taking plenty of outdoor exercise should bring about results. Exercise such as brisk walking, dancing, skating, should all be helpful toward this end. 2.—This is the moat satisfactory method of treatment. The work must be done by an expert in this parti cular line. B. Q.—-What is the cause and remedy for a coated tongue and bad breath? LOCKS FOR CAR RADIATORS NOW ARE NECESSARY Chapel Hill.—A new era has been ushered in locally in automobile robbery—radiator “lifting.” Ben Lane, Chapel Hill boy and student in the university, parked his trusty “flivver” outside the Tin Can the other night when South Carolina and North Carolina stag ed their basketball fracas and lo and behold, when he came out his Ford was radiator-less. The thief, temporarily to cover his work, placed the hood back in position. The owner did not dis cover his loss until he had started his car and driven down the road a few yards when the hood fell off and discovered the front end minus the water tank. If Sir Isaac Newton had based his calculations on a skirt we observed yesterday, instead of on the apple, the thoughtful old boy would have concluded that the law of gravita tion worked in the other direction. —Ohio State Journal.
