He's a dreaming and a thinking How he soon must end the pace. In his memory he sees another Old and fair with hair of gray, With his trembling hand so feeble He wipes the glistening tear away. In his heart there lies his trouble And the burden he must bear, He has lost and he must suffer All the penalty while he Is here. In his heart he knows he's guilty Of the dreaded crime of death, He must pay the awful forfeit With his last gasping breath. He remembers how It happened How he did this awful thing, And his body often shudders As If In coldness or In pain. He Is shut away from life By the bars thats fenced around He Is waiting for the moment When old dfath will cease to frown. He Is thinking of his childhood And the days of long ago. He is thinking of what had hap pened And what the time had rome to show. He Is thinking of his old home With its cheer and beauty rare. He is dreaming of his mother Of her love and tender care In his dreams he sees his mother Standing there vlth open arms. She in calling and a waiting With her love and tender charms. He is awaken from his dreaming By the moon across the bars, He is gazing up and outward At the pale and hazy stars. He Is asking this one question Is there a chance for me to live? He Is asking the One above him If he's willing to for give He has lost his hardest battle And grim death must be his goal, He Is praying for the keeper To bring rest to his weary soul. In the East he sees the dawn Mounting on her steps so high, With Tils hands he grasps the bars For the time has come to rite. In the aisle he hears the warden Coming to his deathly cell. He is coming for execution And the time has come to tell. He is carried by the keeper To the grim and ghastly rope, He is longing for his mother And her tender charm and hope. He is asked for his last message As he lifts his weary head, “Tell my mother I am ready.” This and nothing more he said.
