And was always stealing through By every car and crossing too. He was always slipping on Be it right or be it wrong. And forever causing strife In the auto drivers life. He was bold and daring then When the line oC cars were thin. But he knew the thicker maze Would somehow shorten Mis days. It was queer the way he drove Into every nick and cove. With that lightening speed of his He’d go by them on the whiz. He was always calling out As he passed by with a shout. And was always pokihg fun At the cars that wouldn’t run. He was always in the way Blocking traffic every day, And he wore his silly grin That he carried to the end. He was fond of his good brakes And he filled the hearts with quakes As he drove up quick and fast Finally stopping at the last. But he was fondest of his speed For he loved his noble steed, It was noted for it’s vim And it eased his slightest whim. He was fond of good highways And it was there he spent his days, Driving fiercely up and down In and out of every town. It was there he lost his life And It ended his speedy strife, For he traveled up and down TUI he reached the fatal town. He was driving fast along Singing then his crazy song, As he turned a curve nearby Another car came gliding nigh. With his foot he fed the brakes That had made the heartstrings ache, But it faUed to have the pep And it’s everlasting rep. When the cars were torn apart He was found with failing heart, And as they laid him on the side “It wasn’t my fault, he loudly cried. He had run the final race And grim death had shown his face, I He was lost within the fog i The fate and death of a road hog. I - BAN SOUGHT ON GIRLS UNDER 18 AT PUBLIC HOPS Asheville.—The city commission ers of Asheville have been asked to pass a law forbidding girls under ; 18 years old from appearing at dances of a public or semi-public nature, it was revealed by C. H. Bartlett, commissioner of public safety. - Mr. Barlett said he did not know the attitude of the other commis sioners, but personaliy.be does not favor such, a law. I think such matters should be controlled in the home,’ he de clared. 'There is too much tend ency on the part , of parents to pass the burden of rearing their chlld dren on to somebody else. 1 don’t think the city should be asked to discipline children,” Science Measures Blushes Of Girl Scientists Learn That Blond Blushes Are Hotter Than Are Brunettes. New York.—The temperatures of blushes on a girl's cheek were measured last night In the pres ence of the guests at the science dinner of the American Institute. Only mild blushes were available on the cheeks of the young woman who sat before the diners with a thermopile two feet from her face registering her passing emotions. Her blushes recorded about five one-hundredths of one degree, Fahrenheit, and order of blush scarcely sufficient to Induce much color. The heat measured Is radia tion caused by the blood rushing into the cheeks during the emo tion. Dr. B. E. Free, who conducted the demonstration, explained that num erous experiments have put the temperatures of blushing in well defined classes. Blondes, he said, are prone to greater differences of temperature range in blushing than are brun ettes, this might be because their cheeks normally are slightly cold er than those of brunettes. It In dicates, said Dr. Free, that on the average blond blushes are hotter than brunettes. The thermopile which recorded the temperature changes was held about two feet from the young woman’s cheek. * It resembled a small auto horn, and registered the amount of radiation. In another demonstration, a deep throated whistle, almost a perfect imitation of an ocean liner’s blast, startled the diners. But it was only the sound made by an electric light, the kind used almost universally in households. It was part of a dem onstration by John Bellamy Taylor, | of the General Electric company', of sending light over sound waves. The light of the electric bulb was transformed into sound.
