University Commerce Dean Gives Amazing Figures On Property Acquired By Masses. One of the most impressive fea tures of the tremendous increase in wealth which the nation has ex perienced in recent years, is the fact that the masses of the people are using the saving agencies of the country to acquire wealth and prop erty at a more rapid rate than wealth is being invested in indus trial and commercial properties, comments Dr. D. D. Carroll, dean of the school of commerce, univers ity of North Carolina, Figures lately released by tha federal government vividly reveal the vigor of the average American’s saving instincts. In eight key fac tors the percentage of increase from 1919 through 1927 is shown. Population, 13; Deposits in savings accounts, 100; Life insurance in force, 80; Building and loan associa tion assets, 239; Building and loan association members, 168; Motor vehicles registered, 206; High school students, 52; College students, 57. Dr, Carroll terms this remarkable progress. While the population has increased but 13 per cent, life in surance has increased six and one half times as fast, savings deposits eight times as fast, building and loan membership 13 times as fact and building and loan assets 18 times as fast as population growth. The number of automobiles In use has increased three-fold. That pro gress has not been confined to ma terial things is evidenced by a growth in high school and college enrollment four times faster than the growth in population. The significant fact, however, is that people are providing more gen erously for their own futures. In creased saving means funds to draw upon in sickness, accident, old age or death. They spell independence and freedom from worry and citi zens able to take care of them selves. Saving through the building and loan the savings bank and the insurance company appeals particu larly to wage earners, clerks, salar ied people and the great throng with small or moderate incomes. The.' should be doing what the figures I show they arc doing, putting their money where it will be safe, careful ly handled, used to promote the up building of their communities, and will be available when needed. The amazing grow th of the build ing and loan associations testifies to another praiseworthy fact, that people are investing in homes in constantly increasing ratio. Last year the associations financed over 500.000 homes in the United States. In North Carolina between 7,000 and 8.000 new' homes are built every year through first mortgage loans from the building and loan organi zations. Atlanta Portia Thinks Marriage Is Not For Her Atlanta, Ga — Nuptial bolls will ; never ring for America's youngest j girl lawyer. Miss Inna Von Nunes, 19. who bears the distinction, it is believed,! of being the youngest girl in the ! United States to be admitted to the j bar, and mast certainly the young- ; est of her sex to ever plead a case ! before the Georgia surpreme court, , declares that marriage and a ca- ! reer don't mix and she chooses the ! latter. Her desire to keep pace with five brothers, you have to hold your own,” she said. “None of them has any interest in legal science, but I always wanted to be a lawyer.” She denies that time and the right man might alter her opinion of weddings. “I am very settled in my ideas," she explains, “I might as well be twenty-five now.-' “What do I think of the younger generation? Well, most young people are just as nice as they can be, and all this talk about the world getting worse and worse is a lot of rot. I think the world is getting better and better. If it wasn't I would be at home helping with the dishes instead of being a lawyer as I always wanted to be." Miss Nunes characterized many of the restraints which hemmed women in for centuTIes as “Just silliness.” Although a single stand ard for man and women may never arrive, a new standard which will have a "good deal more sense in it” can be expected, she believes. Miss Nunes began her legal training two years ago in her father's office here, and after two years of study, she passed her ex amination and was admitted to the practice of law in the state of Georgia last July.
