Toma, 55, a railroad worker, told

had intrusted to his cousin.
Toma said that he came to
Chicago from Rumania in 1919 as
a refugee. Through the cousin he
was employed by the Chicago Junc
tion railway at a monthly wage of
$106. Of this sum he deposited $100
each month with the cousin and
kept only $6 for himself.
He said that this sum filled
his wants for tobacco and other
"luxuries.” During tire period
he wore cast-off clothes, slept In
box cars, and received food by
working at odd jobs in restaurants.
He appeared clad in overalls. His
cousin left only a mortgaged home.
