YOU COULD YOUR LIFE Urges School Board Note Importance Of Athletics Here Thinks Athletics Important Factor To Shelby Youth. Praises Shelby Instructors. To the Incoming School Board: Your electorate readily appreci ates the position under which your board will labor. Undoubtedly you will be confronted with many problems which you will find diffi cult to solve. You will be constant ly haunted by the matter of fin-! ance, or rather, the lack of It. You will be forced to inaugurate many and stringent economies to stay within the present budget. Your good judgment must be subjugated to meet the expediency. Your elec torate will doubtless expect you to maintain the high standard of schools that other patriotic boards have given us, and do so with less money. When you scan the budget for possible deductions your eyes will naturally turn to the extra curriculum activities and among then you will find athletics. Now, if there is any one factor vitally important to schools it is athletics. Nothing is more firmly grounded in our national educa tional program; nothing can take precedence over it for gathering and maintaining morale. Indeed, it is so firmly entrenched that it has become a part of the life of every community in this great nation. To that ccxntiguency of every elector ate who would grab the hands of time and turn the world back fifty years these facts are unknown. To them a football team represents twenty-two cussing, bleeding, fight ing maniacs running helplessly in the confines of a hundred yard field. And in the like manner, the other sports. They fail to discern the beneficial qualities which are too numerous for me to enumerate here. In the development of the Shelby schools athletics has played a major part. Under the capable adminis tration of two of the most efficient coaches in the state we have made rapid strides toward the permanent establishment of Shelby's name in the state's athletic hall of fame. In every department we have found ourselves capable of competition with cities several times our size. In the colloquilism of the sporting world we have developed into a menancing “threat.’ The state knows that Shelby generally brings home the 'bacon.’ Athletics have done more to advertise Shelby than any other factor of our school sys tem, and the question now arises as to whether or not we can afford to repudiate the effective work that has been accomplished in the past by summarily striking athletics from the life of our schools. We rise to heartily endorse the present athletic administration. Its record has been enviable one. Let us go forward. The fate of this mat ter lies in your hands for solution and we trust that it shall receive your consideration. ’ GENERAL” OBSERVER. Pain caused by extraction of two teeth caused Dr. P. P. Methodist Board Assails Tobacco Washington. — An impending rift In the ranks of northern and southern Methodism is seen as quite likely as the result of the Methodist board of tem perance here, which has long been active in prohibition cir cles. Taking the field against the cigarette evil and the tobacco trust, Rev. Clarence True Wilson, head of the Methodist board, bitterly criti cised the tobacco trust in an address which is the first time that or ganization has publicly gone out against the cigarette. This action Is expected to immediately draw the the of critics who have looked with alarm on church activities. Southern Methodism has bene fited greatly from the Duke mil lions, through Duke University, one of the heaviest endowed colleges in the country as well as through pensions for preachers and other assistance. The Duke millions were made through the American To bacco company and there have al ways been friendly relations be tween the Dukes and Methodism In the south. As a result it is expect ed that the southern church people will thank the Rev. Mr. Wilson has gone too far this time. Numerous attempts have been made to bring about a closer rela tion between the Methodists of the north and the south. Such a pro gram seems further away with the new turn of events.
