I he new con troversy involves Mrs. Nicholas Longworth, the wife of the Speaker of the House of Repre sentatives. in its tangles. A renewal of t lie discussion con cerning the seating of Mrs. Gann was unexpectedly brought about after Invitations had been sent, out for a dinner by Mrs. Eugene Meyer, Jr., whoso husband had re cently retired from the chairman ship of the Federal Loan Board. Mrs. Eongworth, who Is a daugh ter of Theodore Uoosevclt, when in formed of the seating arrangements, sent her regrets. Mrs. Gann. In turn, when Informed of Mrsh Long worth's refusal to attend the din tier, also sent her regrets. That, as far tis can be learned, Is the cause of the new outbreak In the social war. Considerable spec ulation as to why It happened and what will happen further, Is heard on every hand In the drawdng rooms and clubs throughout Wash ington. Of chief interest among such speculation Is the seriousness of the situation—a situation having Mrs. Gann, as hostess for the presiding officer of the Senate, on one side, and the wife of the presiding offi cer of the House of Representatives on the other. The whole story was given cred ence by reports which have flowed about Washington ever since the question arose, that the precedence obtained by the dlplomatto corps decision would never be permitted Mis.
