Greenville. — Women aren't any "‘hotter” these days, but they are smoking more, local tobacconists assert. And vanity, they add, is back of the steady increase. ‘‘.Manufacturers of a certain type of fag have gone so heavy on the ‘‘grab a I,ucky instead of a sweet' stuff that most women, in the opinion of venders of the weed, have a sort of sub conscious feeling that the use of tobacco will keep that girl ish beauty. "Nine out of ten women who buy cigarettes from me have a tendency toward plumpness,” one dealer said, “and most of them assure me that they have taken up smoking to reduce,” they declare. Although some people can still remember when a woman who smoked was known as "fast,” no such attitude appears to exist today. Women who thought nothing of smoking indoors a few years ago now think noth ing of smoking on the street and in drug stores. And half of the fife glowing from behind sedan doors on the main stem come from a tack in a Cupid's bow mouth. All of which confounds church people and delights the druggist, who are planning to erect a monument to the ad writer smart enough to commercialiie vanity. Doubtful Flattery. There was a burst of applause as the pianist finished his last solo. He bowed, and after thanking his au dience, was about to leave when a man approached and presented a check. This the pianist refused, saying he would prefer it to be used for some charitable purpose. ''In that case,” said the donor, ‘T sup pose you wouldn't mind if we add er it to our special fund?” "Not at all.” said the pianist. "What is the special fund for?” "To enable us to have better entertainments for next year.” FOR SALE: 48 1-2 ACRES NO 3 township near Pleasant Hill church adjoining land Arvilla Mc Swain. L. I. COPELAND, M. 17. (United States Senator and former Health Commissioner of New York) (Inquiries may be addresed to Dr. Copeland, care The Star, Shelby, N. C. If you desire a personal reply, enclose a stamped envolepo,e ad dressed back to you.) 61 ■ • ... . mm ■■■■■■■ A few days ago I talked with a rugged and apparently healthy young woman. She told me she had Just recovered from an attack of pleurisy. ' This is a disagreeable ailment. It attacks persons of all ages, la Ml cumAWft, itself the disease is not particularly important. Unfortunately, however, there is a disagreeable relationship betwen pleurisy and tuberculosis. Not for a moment would I have you thin:; that every case of pleurisy is a symptom of tu berculosis. I do want you to know, however, that no chances must be taken in recovering from an attack. Too many of us are inclined to sneer at disease. We take it too lightly. During the fever and the uncomfortable symptoms accom panying it, we form all sorts of resolutions. We determine that we are going to do everything necessary to avoid sickness in the future. But just as soon as we begin to get better our good resolutions are forgotten. In our hurry to get back to business we do not give Nature half a chance to complete the recovery. There are some attacks of pleurisy which, painful as they are, are not particularly serious. A perfectly healthy individual may suffer with symptoms of pleurisy after exposure to wet or cold. There are the usual signs of trouble. Slight fever and pain in me siae. nnen uie auciu.. ueiciis to the chest he finds frict’on in breathing. In a favorable case, there is no accumulation of fluid within the chest and the symptoms disappear within a few days. In another type of pleurisy there i^ am accumulation of fluid. The word used to describe this is ‘ effu sion." The condition is known to the doctors as "pleurisy with effu sion." In every such case we are dealing with an ailment of considerable con sequence. An unfriendly germ is present in the system. It is bound to be an uncomfortable neighbor. You need not think you are going *o die if you are unfortunate enough t'. take on a passenger of this de scription, but certain precautions are absolutely necessary. I wouldn't speak to you at all about this matter if I did not do it for a specific purpose. I want you to understand that pleurisy should not be neglected. If your doctor tells you you have this ailment ami advises you to keep quiet, you should do exactly as he says. The germs I have mentioned are germs capable of producing pus, 01 tc create other unpleasant compli cations. They lead to a physical condition which may make you very ill and impair your usefulness for a long time. You should lead such a life that ycur powers of resistance are always operating. They are working all the time to guard you against enemies if given half a chance. Hard work and worry lower the vitality. The burden of having to earn a living and to support a fam ily makes it difficult to escape abuse cf the body. If you have a beautiful vase ov some other fragile possession you oo not spend all your time worrying for fear it may be broken. But you do take pains to keep the vase under conditions which will insure its safety. Why don’t you do this with your body? Certainly it is more impor . THE PERSON WHO HAS NOTHING Is Usually The One Who Does All The Damage. Your O p 1 y Safe guard is Insurance With CHAS. A. HOEY tant than any ordinary personal property. Guard it against harm and if by any chance you do get sick, deal honestly with Nature. As sist her in the process of getting well. Answers To Health Queries. Mrs. W. Va.—In telling how.she was benefited by taking Cardui, Mrs. Perlle Yelkey, of this place, says: "At one time, I had a very serious spell which left me weak. At times, I would suffer such Intense pains acmes my back and In my side that I could hardly stand it. "I endured this over and over again. Every time the pains wen worse than before. "I was In despair because nothing helped me. I tried several reme dies. but I continued to suffer. “One day. I read about Cardui. Other women told how they had gotten strong and well after taking it. I have often been thankful for that day. for after I had taken Car dui for awhile, I felt like a different human being. “It did not seem possible, but I did not suffer the old. torturing pains, and I really felt well. I can heartily recommend Cardui, for I know how much I Improved after I took it. Since then. I have taken ft several times when I have needed a tonic, and I have always been benefited. It is a wonderful help.” All good druggists sell Cardui. Talking Ball For Shelby This Year Over The Section Hickory Record. Will Hlcokry be minus baseball games completely during the sum mer months? So far. sport followers of this chy have made no effort whatever to organize a baseball team for summer games, and no j interest has been shown in organiz ing a city league for the younger | I players of the city. Meanwhile.
