Upholds Condemnation Of Social Mingling Of Races Austin, Tex., July 8.—Governor vioody today approved in part and iisapproved in part the concurrent •esolution passed by the Texas leg slature condemning Mrs. Herbert Hoover, wife of the President of the United States-, for entertaining the wife of a negro congressman at a tvhite house tea. "Any part of this resolution which nay be reasonably construed as a personal criticism of the wife of the president of t lie United States of America docs not have my approv al and X decline to have any part in it,” he said in a statement filed in the document department of the secretary of state's office. Referring to a section of the reso lution which reminded southern democrats who voted for the re publican presidential nominee that, they had been cautioned just such incident*! as the one condemned might happen, the governor said: • Recognizing the right of every citizen to vote his own convictions, T do not assert the right to official ly upbraid any because they exer cise the liberty to hold and vote views different from mine, nor do I approve any attempt at official criticism of any citizen's vote.” The resolution had his "hearty approval” insofar as "it condemns customs that bring the two races into contact, upon the same social plane,” he stated. Secretary of Statfc | Thinks Cleveland Can Do Without Farm Demonstrator With r««y Communlration And Agriculture Taught In Public Schools. To Editor of The Star: In reference to the resignation of our county farm demonstrator, 1 wish to make a few statements which I would appreciate your printing In a near issue of your paper. Let me state in the beglflnlng that my remarks are not intended with any reflection upon the gen eral idea of agricultural enlighten ment, or upon the work that has been done in Cleveland county through the demonstrator's or home extension agent's offices. There has been a time when the office of either of these agents was an asset to a county. When means of communication between the farming people and the sources of information at Raleigh and Wash ington were not as frequent and convenient as they are today, and when the rural schools were still functioning at a very low rate of progress, the county agents filled a place that could not otherwise be taken care of. The improvement between our state and national departments and the private citizen places the entire research work of these agencies within easy reach of the farmer. Any information compiled by the government is published in bulletin form and awaits distribution for the asking. ine mam reason, nowever. why the offices of farm agent and home extension agents are to be rendered Ineffective in a progressive county Is the fact that the people in rural sections are fast coming to the point of having agriculture, as a scientific subject, taught in the public schools. It Is an indisputable fact that a youthful mind can bring home and present logical reasoning and in formation much better than can one outside of the family. The vo cational work in the rural schools is rapidly expanding, and in^ our own county It has almost expanded to the point where we have two overlapping means of instruction, both of which are taking a portion of the taxpayers money. The vocational instructor In the public schools receives the same aid, both as to information and fi nancial assistance that the farm and extension agents receive. In like manner the home exten sion work In the county is very rapidly being absorbed by the home economics department in the rural schools. instructor or agent, re gardless of educational qualifica tions. can present a new fact to a housekeeper, with as much results as can a daughter of the bouse. I believe It would be a distinct forward step and in keeping with the agricultural progress of Cleve land county, if our county commis sioners lend their aid to the teach ing of agriculture and home econo mics in all the rural schools instead of maintaining a central office in the county seat which cannot pos sibly have the direct contact that results from teaching these subjects to the youthful mind of the school pupil. in further reference to the rhral schools, I am looking forward to the time when we can make them a direct agency for the conservation of human life through the practical teaching of health and disease pre ventatives. A school equipped with health demonstration facilities and rendering practical assistance to children will accomplish a need, the value of which could not be valued in money. We have made rapid progress In all the material things of this county. Why not make it one of the pioneer counties to enccrtirage the maximum of practical teaching in the schools to the children who must later h* the citizens of the county? W. A. CROWDER Lattimore, July 11. Is Refused Car; Youth Ends Life Lancaster, 3. C.—Because his father, R. E. Kenninglon, refused him the use of his car for a fishing trip, Leroy Kennington, 22. cursed his parents and committed suicide in Lancaster county yesterday aft ernoon about 5 o’clock. A load from a shotgun, fired into his body just above his heart, proved instantly fatal. A coroner’s jury, headed by W. J. Small, coroner, rendered a ver dict of suicide at 8 o’clock Young Kennington. according to his family, had been drinking yes terday afternoon, and came to his father with the request for the car. He was refused. Leaving the Ken nington home he returned in about half an hour and cursed his father and mother. Then he went to the home of his grandfather, 500 yards distant, where he had been staying for the last seven months. His grandfather, on the front porch' heard the re port of the gun shortly after. Ken nington was found dead. Star Advertising Pays Rumors Business Sold Reports in the automobile world say that John N.
