Crowd Of Whites Chase N. Y. Negroes New York.—Eight bruised, bleed ing and frightened negroes were ar rested recently after a crowd esti mated by police at nearly 1,000 chased them a mile through streets of the lower Eastside and residents pelted them with missiles thrown from windows. The trouble started when th° negroes, laughing and shouting, climbed into a taxicab packed in Clinton street and attempted io drive away. They attacked two white men who ordered them out of the cab. A crowd collected and charged the negroes and in the melec that followed a 16-year-old boy was cut about the head. The din aroused residents of j the neighborhood and pots, pans ■ bricks and assorted odds and ends were rained upon the negroes from Clinton street windows. The ne- ; grocs fought themselves free and ran, but at every turn they found themselves attacked from another ( direction They had run more than a mil ’ | through half a dozen streets before j police reserves arrested them. They ! were charged with felonious assault j and as each carried a large pocket knife, some of which police said i were blood-stained; the negroes also I were charged with violating the ' Sullivan law. Humphries. 85 year* of age passed away at the home of his son-in-law, H. F. Hamrick on July 18. Mr. Humphries was a gallant Confederate soldier, a memDer of the Baptist, church, and was held in high esteem by all who kn»v him. Funeral services and Interment took place at Mount Pleasant Bap tist church, being conducted by thr pastor, the Rev. E. G. White. In addition to his widow, he leaves several children.
