Chicago.—Criminals plying their trade in Chicago this fall, arc due to bump against something new in detective work Both the University of Chicago and Northwestern university are pre paring non' to demonstrate what science can do when directed against crime. They are prepared to use the city as a laboratory, and at, tile moment are rounding out details of methods to be pursued. In each instance scientific spe cialists are available to give the most modem touch to the research work. At the University of Chicago. Chief August Vollmer, of Berkeley, Cal.—long noted as the country s most scientific policeman—will be on hand October 1, to head the crime research department there. Expert In Charge. At Northwestern university, Ma jor Calvin Goddard, ballistics ex pert of renown. Is to take charge of the research department, to operate under a $300,000 cndownment pro vided by Chicago business men. He now is in Europe studying the more .scientific methods of police in Lon don, Berlin and Paris. These departments, linking po lice work to the facilities of high er education were Inspired by the St. Valentine's Day massacre here of seven Moran gangsters. The fu tility of ordinary police methods in seeking slayers of crimes of this type led to the engagement of Ma jor Goddard in the hope that a study of and bullets-used in.the killing might lead to identi fication of the killers. Prom this grew the idea of a general crime laboratory, 'Chicago and other American cities are far behind Europe in the scientific inquiry of clues,” Ma’Or Goddard said before leaving on his present tour of investigation.
