department store, he will di
vide $1,000,000 among employes
grown old in His service.
He has deeided that the men
and women who worked with
him in making his establish
ment one of the country’s great
department stores, should share
in the profits they helped to
create. Mr. Bamberger is sev
enty-four. He founded L. Bam
berger * Co. thirtyflve years
ago. June 29 it was announced
that the Bamberger store had
been bought by R. 11. JHacy *
Co. Inc., of New York.
Last week notices were sent
out to Bamberger employes in
relation to Mr. Bamberger’s re
tirement, and the gifts he an
nounced were to be made to
veteran employes out of his es
tate. It was announced that em
ployes who had been with the
Bamberger store fifteen years
or more would be the benefic

It was learned from employes
that in some Instances where
department heads are concern
ed the gifts will amount to as

Primary In North Carolina

Had Colonel Watts lived North
Carolina would never have fallen

paign, said an associate and ad
mirer of the late leader. Colonel
Watts Intended to advance a fa
vorite son and to get North Caro
lina solidly befiind the man. He
was not expected to have a show
and he would never have lasted
for long in the convention. But
such a plan would have forced
Hull Democrats into line. The
state would have been carried for
Smith. That la one view.
But in many circles. Senator
Simmons, the aged proponent of
stand-pat Democracy who jumped
his party after the convention
is regarded as little less than a
traitor to his party. Many of the
Democrats who have marched to
the polls for Simmons in '.he past
openly declare they will either fail
to vote or will vote the Republican
ticket. Chief Justice Stacey
of the North Carolina supreme
court, is mentioned, quite unofficial
ly, as the one man who can beat
Simmons in the primary. The pros
pect iq that he will not run for the
office Josiah Williams Bailey Is an
other possiblility to oppose Sim
mons.
The Republican party in North
Carolina would prefer that Sim
mons wins in the primary without
difficulty, one observer thinks.
The party would then utilise the
Republican vote in the state the
disgruntled Democratic vote, and
tne noatmg vote to acnieve a
Republican victory. On the other
hand, others are saying that
the Republican party would prefer
to see Simmons lose In the pri
mary and run on an Independent
ticket, thus splitting the Demo
cratic vote.
Senator Simmons will be very
hard to beat if he chooses to run.
Not because of his value as a
senator or what he has done In
behalf of the state, but for the
whip handle. It is whispered that
McLean would be Rlad if Simmons
were to be re-elected. The senator
could hardly finish out his term
and McLean would be ready to
succeed him to office. We expect
the next primary to contain as
much bitterness as any campaign
in a number of years and regard
less of its logic, the DePric't
