Around Our TOWN Shelby SIDELIGHTS By RENN DRUM NOW THAT SHELBY HAS DECIDED THAT ALL FOUR SIDES OF the county court lrou.se arc front sides, the photographer who wanted to make a picture of the ‘‘front side" is gone. Anyway, that photographer start ed a bigger argument than any other photo maker ever to visit town. He has that to put in his rec ord book. Still everybody Isn’t satis fied in the matter, and contempor ary newspapers are making their quips about Shelby's big controversy. Well, as for that, this front-side ar gument is not half so dangerous a.i some other arguments going on in North Carolina. THEY'RE TELLINO A GOOD one over at McNeely's ladles shop, although It Is a bit mysterious. The other afternoon, at a period when business wns not rushing us Is the usual case on long summer afternoons. Mr. McNeely and some of his clerks were seated about the store when In walked a gent, ap parently knowing Just where he was going, and why. He strode back through the store until he was near the center of the display room Then he wheeled to the right and started walking again. Blam! Sqush! “Ouch!'' The gentleman walked right into the big mirror in which the sweet: things about town peer when they try on the new fall coats or peep to see how long thetr sun back goes, or how high the other end comes up. Apparently he mistook the big mirror for a door, but Just where le was going and why the clerks, who couldn’t aurpress their giggles, never did learn. As he walked out robbing his nose bruised in the collision, one of the girls inquired: "Something we can do for you." "No thank you," he replied "I was just looking for some black shoe polish. Wonder if the heat docs things like that to a fellow? SCATTERED T'HOUOHTS So. Ruth Elder has been taken into Camp—but for how long?. Somehow it seems as if a line or two must have been left out of that news story about, the rural police man and textile worker killing each other near Charlotte—it doesn t read just right. With many other men following his fad of pa jama wearing on the street. W O. Saunders may next appear in puo lic clad in his Bee Vee Dees. Sever il of the Shelby cx-service men down to Raleigh for the Legion conven tion saw the portly Elizabeth City edttor strolling about In his pajamas Incidentally, It Is related that a French woman, how old we know not, there for the convention, saw : Saunders and said: “The great feat man wearing ces pajamas ees vatr funny. So much what you call stormuch; such a sweet shiny head. I like to kees eet." And In his home paper Saunders wrote, perhaps for the benefit of the good wife, that "the editor did not meet the French woman”.One Mecklenburg farmer, being queried as a prospec tive Juror for the Aderholt hearing, declared that he did not read the editorial pages of the Charlotte Ob server and Charlotte News. That's funny, for Mecklenburg voted for Hoover last fall. SHELBY SHORTS: A Chapel Hill student shot himself because he dealt a bad bridge hand to himself. That should interest Charlie Wood son. who tells Key club members every night that he never dealt him self a good hand in his life, but he's still trying Instead of shooting . . W. T. iBig) Alexander, the insur ance salesman, out in his front yard cutting grass in the rain with his wife holding an umbrella over him .... Ebeltoft, different as usual contends that t'r.c south side of the court house is the front side. A lot of men. critical yet obser vant. argue that women when seat ed cross their legs altogether too much. Perhaps so, but of 18 men seated on court square benches one day recently w# counted 15 with their legs crossed. It's just human nature more than an urge to display silken-clad or stockingless limb* . . . What ever became of Frank Lewis, the Princess Pat harp player? The strikers trial at Charlotte is the big talk on Shelby streets and, be lieve it or not, the concensus of opinion is that the defendants will be freed ... Lawyers In and around Shelby are assuming all manner of dignity in recent weeks, judicial dignity, we might say. Y’see “Judge Jim" Webb will not seek office again. “DOC" DORTON IS ALL PEP ped up, move than is his habit, over the county fair the last week of this month. And he contends that be fore the opening day Is over the thousands in attendance will be just as excited as he is. He’s promising to spring something new, several somethings, this fall. FOR FREE DIAGNOSIS AND LITERATURE WRITE: W. C. Rountree, M. D., Austin, Teaaa, MBS. 1. V. COLLETT Stay In High School. Lexington Dispatch. Governor Gardner has found out something in a recent investigation that should interest every high school boy in North Carolina, and the parents of all high school boys as well. There are a hundred young men, many of whom should now' be Juniors or seniors in high school, in the youifg men’s colony at State prisn. The governor asked them a lot of questions concerning their family relations, whether they at tended Sunday school or church and as to their educational preparation. He found that r.o^a single one of these boys, now serving time for stealing automobiles, committing robberies and other crimes of vio lence or stealth, had graduated from high school. Many of these same boys have at tended high school. Some of them "made up their minds” they didn’t need to go to school any longer. A high school diploma would mean nothing in their young lives, they thought. Sadly enough, the parents of a good many of these boys al lowed themselves to be persuaded to the same end. The thing dis covered by the governor indicates that if these young men who drop ped out of high school had stuck to their books until they conquered the experience would have ’ given them that confidence and self re spect that would have kept them out of the primrose path. A high school diploma is not a guarantee against a prison cell, but it is a strong influence in the opposite di rection. Just now hundreds of boys throughout North Cnrffolina are pondering whether they should go back to high school next month and hundreds of parents are wavering as to their responsibility in this problem. Perhaps the fact that there is not a single high school graduate among the hundred youths of high school age who have land ed in State prison should point the way in the right direction. ROAD NOTICE To Whom It May Concern: The highway commission of No. 8 township respectfully calls atten tion to section 3 of chapter 098. Public Local Laws, session 1915: “Sec. 3 That no landowner, his ser vants, tenants, or agenta, shall so ter race, ditch or drain the lands adjac ent to any public road in Cleveland county built or maintained or under the jurisdiction of any highwav commission or road authorities of said county acting under a special act of the legislature as to throw water upon such public road, or maintain such terraces, ditch, or drain already built or hereafter built, but ditches, drains, and ter races shall be so constructed as to carry the water away from said public road or only to such point, on said public road where a culvert or other outlet has been provided; and any person who shall construct or maintain such terrace, ditch, oi drain shall be liable In a civil action for damage by the highway com mission or road authorities of tru road district or township where same is constructed or maintained and may be enjoined from rhe con struction or maintenance of same and any person constructing or maintaining such drains, ditches, or terraces, after being notified by the road authorities or highway com mission of the district or township not to do so, shall be guilty of r misdemeanor, and upon conviction shall be fined not exceding fifty dollars or imprisoned not exceed ing thirty days.’’ Our roads are costing more every year to maintain them. The co-op eration of all the people in draining water from rather than into the roads will greatly help in relieving the burden in maintaining the roads. and relieve the taxpayeis generally. Attention is respectfully called to this condition at this time when roads are suffering greatest damage from drainage of water from fields into roads. Respectfully, C. C. WARLICK, Chairman, J. M. LEDFORD, Secretary E. L. WEATHERS. Highway Commission No. 8 Township. SOUTH CAROLINA Foods And The Goiter Problem The disease known as goiter is an enlargement of the thy roid gland, due to a deficiency of iodine in the diet. Conse quently, one of the most important preventive measures ever undertaken in the interest of health is the effort to obtain foods that naturally contain a sufficient amount of iodine so that when eaten in moderate quantities they will prevent goiter. South Carolina farms produce food products, vegetables and fruits, high in iodine content. Farms consisting of tracts of 50 to 500 acres may be purchased on attractive terms. For particulars write N.
