C.—Strange tales have come out of the recent floods which put tinder water about 400 square miles of low er Jasper and Beaufort coun ties. Every living thing that could rlimb or fly sought a perch in the tree tops above the muddy torrent. Those that didn't drowned. Sheriff Ed McTeer and Clifford Baxter,-of Beaufort, who worked three days and two nights carrying aid to some of the 600 marooned persons, laughed at a goat and ex perienced unpleasant feelings when they came in too close contact with swamp rattlers driven from their lair. The sheriff reported killing ele ven large rattlesnakes. The goat he rescued and piled in a boat which contained rabbits, o’possums and chickens. The goat promptly be gan to celebrate by butting every thing In sight. Most of the marooned persons were negroes. They were found In trees, on housetops and anywhere else they could climb above the waters. One had a keg of liquor with him. All were thirsty and some had been forced to drink the polluted flood waters. Circus Coming Oct. 23 Has Three Rings "Sweethearts On Parade” Will Show Entire Talent Of The Show In Big Parade. LAWSUIT OVER HEN’S DEATH DEVELOPS COMPLICATIONS The Toulouse court has delayed Its verdict in the case of Pessant vs. Duminy for three months be cause each time it has come up for trial the defendant or the plain tiff has introduced supplementary action. Last June Antoine Duminy was driving his automobile through a suburb of Toulouse when a hen belonging to Jules Pessant, a local horse-shoer, became confused at the headlights of the car. flew at them, broke one, and then died under the wheels. M. Pessant demanded 50 francs, or $2.04, as compensation. The motorist refused to pay on the ground that thie hen had smashed his headlight. The two drove to a garage where the headlight w»s repaired for 52 francs. or $212. Thereupon M. Duminy called upon the horse-shoer to pay him the1 dif ference between the value of the hen and cost of repairs, which was 2 frartes. The horseshoer again declined and was sued for the 2 francs. When the case first came up M. Pessant lodged a counter claim for 150 francs, or $6, on the ground that the slain bird was a sitHns hen and that the eggs which would have been hatched were worth the amount claimed, minus the 2 francs. Thereupon M. Duminv in stituted a supplementary suit claim ing damages of 250 francs, or $10 20, the cost of a new glass to his lamp and the danger IncmvsJ bv using (he repaired one. Observer Hopes To See Cleveland Rebuilt Charlotte Observer. Fires may come and take away one building after another, but the springs down at the foot of the shaded hill on the famous old Cleveland Springs property, at Shelby—that town has built out close to it in recent years—like Tennyson’s brook—will flow on for ever. The water stays Just as in the days of the old stage coach, when South Carolina aristocracy reigned during the summer months. Not only the original springs, but the original house of pioneer days survive, the old frame building hav ing been set to one side out of reach of the flames that have reduced two more modern structures to ashes. Then there's the golf links and the fine club house unburned and to be sure a new an even more modernly-appointed hotel building will be erected as the central at traction. The structure burned Tuesday night was completed about a dozen years ago, taking the place of the hotel thaf was built by Wi'. kinson, the eastern lumber man. and which enjoyed a popular run cf custom before it blazed out one night. The Cleveland Springs hos telry has had a number of noted managers. McBryde Poston's reign was one yet fondly remembered. Then came Mr. Robert Miller, from the editorial sanctum to the hotel register—and everybody wanted to go back when Miller was there. In former years, Cleveland Springs was a summer resort, but in later | days it was developed, with the aid of a fine hotel, into an all -the year-round resort and deservedly had profitable patronage. Shelby money and enterprise being back of it, we shall expect to hear shortly of architects being engaged on the new Job. Victim Of Psychology. The little stenographer came back from lunch half in tears and with a brand new pair of shoes under her arm. Her girl friend inquired the reason for her apparent distress, says the New York Sun. “Every time I go to buy a pair of \ new shoes,” she explained, "nat xr ally I wear my next best pair. Up to the time I enter the store they took perfectly line to me, and I think I can make them last for another sev eral months. But the minute the shoe clerk takes them Into his hands and looks at them they begin to get shabbier and shabbier until l'tn ashamed to wear them.” ‘‘That, my dear,” the other «?trl said, "Is what the boss calls good salesmanship. You mustn’t mind; Just try it out on somebody vour self.” After visiting the nearby exoeii ment station at Florence, S.
