Yes, when the fate of the thir teen colonies trembled in the bal ance; when South Carolina was tasting the wormwood and gall of subjugation from enemies without and from venal ToHes within, end when Georgia was also in the toils of defeat, the gallant mountain men assembled under leadership of the gallant and gifted Isaac She' by, grim old Benjamin Cleveland, John Sevier, McDowell, Williams Campbell and others and hurled the daring Colonel Furgeson and his minions from the crest of his toric Kings Mountain; thereby turning the tide of this titanic struggle for freedom in favor of the gallant patriots who fought under the leadership of Washington, Greene, and other heroic spirits. As this signal struggle occurred on the borders of this historic county, it was fitting that the county should be named in honor of the grim chieftain from the ‘‘state of Wilkes” and our beautiful town/ for the most eminent spirit among these defenders of the faith and the winners of this important victory. He was first governor of the mar tial commonwealth of Kentucky; and his prominence in civic mat ters left his name in towns ard counties of North Carolina, 'Ten nessee, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois and several other states as you can ascertain by looking at a complete and reliable map. Wherever the-spirit of Isaac Shel by stalks like the peripatetic soul of John Brown, politics is the breath in the nostrils of every tnan of lawful age. Everybody of the great army of provincials vegetat ing here can speak for North Caro lina, especially the county of Cleve land and the town of Shejbys^and your Uncle Corn Cradfer bef^ig familiar with rest of territory c&p answer for the population of them. But he is at present badly con fused. He is a product of Kentucky where he learned militant and un terrified Democracy at the feet of the late gifted but erratic Colon.’! Henry Washington. His parents and grandparents were old line Wh.gs; but at close of bloody Civil war be came militant Democrats; and so did his brothers; who are in Chi cago, Illionis, Bogard, Missouri ana two in Ephrata, Washington. No; one of them ever held or aspired for a political office; but defended the tenets and traditions of Demo cracy through all vicissitudes. When fusion made the bludcr of coin-1 mitting the cast to black and i: - responsible hordes, your Uncb Corn Cracker was loyal to the col ors; and whoever impeaches his democracy, or even has done so by direct charge or innuendo; is v-ry economical with the truth and h.ti not the fear of the Lord before his face. Quite a while ago. two men as pired for United States senator in North Carolina. One was a success ful lawyer, an astute politician, but an unfaltering Democrat, The other had defended the Bonnie Blue flag from Bethel to Appomattox, came home in rags and poverty; bu* amassed millions and became a philanthropist. He gave of his muni ficent means to unfortunate old southern soldiers and was a'beauti ful patron of education. The writer supported him, and used tongue and pen to promote his political inter ests. He was abused, maligned, mis represented and an ungrateful state permitted this heroic old soldier and philanthropist to go down In defeat. Later a gallant Eastern plumed knight of militant Demo cracy tried conclusions with the in cumbent for U. S. senator and Corn Cracker, without consulting the self-appointed censors, supported him. Of course he suffered from misrepresentation and vituperation, but his apology was, "If I have said anything I ought to be sorry for I am glad of it.*’ Now this past proph et past master and interpreter of Democracy is- spoken of as a trai THEY CAME AND THEY BOUGHT The first three days sales of THE PARAGON’S CLOSING OUT SALE were great. Every department did its best. We did not have so many of our good friends from the country the first two days, because i they were busy gathering cotton, but they were here Saturday and they will be here from now on, because Cleveland county folks are thrifty buyers, they know merchandise, they know prices— And They Know THE PARAGON’S, Merchandise And Prices. We are closing out our en tire stock, all new and up to-date fall merchandise, Ready-To-Wear, Clothing, Shoes, Furniture, Etc, at prices unheard of this time of the year. FOLKS, It Will Pay You To Come Miles and Miles. Come at once and share in these great bargains. THE PARAGON ' tor. If he Is now he was then; for his message rings true on the car dinal principles of Democracy. Verily your Uncle Corn Cracker has fled into the wilderness as a political scapegoat and his own deg won’t follow him. In the language or Antemas Ward, “Alars; alirs; that we should live, borrow and fail to do business.” MELVIN L.
