HONEST ONfiS COME OUT WISER AND POORER Dunn Dispatch. Judge Townsend has gone far in politics, but it has not been without tremendous sacrifice on his part For one thing, he has surrendered a lucrative law practice, and that will have to be regained. Few poli tical jobs, especially thoee at the top, are lucrative, and those who gain them usually come out wiser, but poorer. TRAITORS TO BLOOD BOUGHT OPPORTUNITIES Williamston Enterprise. We know of no phase of American life today that has improved since the war ended, but find mental, moral, and spiritual poverty hover ing thickly over the American social fabric. No people have ever been greater traitors to the blood bought opportunities sacrificed by their own sons than the American people. Should Give Sympathy. Charlotte Observer. Because Bill Sunday is an evan gelist, the scornful will chuckle in delight over the developed circum stances that he is father to a wild blade of a son, but the more thoughtful public will be inclined to express sympathy with him in the evil possession, mindful of the pros pect that young men of the kind sometimes turn out better citizens than some of their critics. What Crushes Farmers. WilUamston Enterprise. * Agriculture Is not suffering for the want of protection from other countries. The thing that has crush ed the farmer is that New ifork band of tariff robbers. More Talk About Recorder Kennedy Paper In Statesville Praises Method Of Conducting Court. Could Win Again. Statesville Daily. The Shelby Star hears that Judge Kennedy of the Cleveland county court, may not seek re-election. One of the reasons assigned Is that the judge Is unpopular with a cer tain element because he insists cm trying all cases In the court room, before the public. He has refused all requests from friends of defendants ' and their attorneys that they be ' permitted to follow him to his of fice and present the side of the de fendants anew, with personal pleas that sentences be changed. The obvious advantage to defendants of such practices Is manifest. In priv acy there Is more of the .perconal appeal of man to man than can be made In the court room. Statements can be made that would not go un challenged In the court room, whore the prosecution Is represented and there are witnesses to the proceed ing. The private hearing Is ex parte, one-sided—so much so that no judge should permit it at any time. In privacy there is opportunity foi portunity for appeal, that would not be made in open court. Some judges personal pressure on the judge, op can hear these appeals to private, and do hear them, as unmoved as they would hear them while on the bench to epen court. Others can't. They are moved by Jhe pressure, tin uncontradicted statements, the per sonal appeal, that would not reach them to the atmosphere of the court. And that is the very reason why the appeals should not be per mitted to private unless in excep tional cases, and then only with the prosecution represented. This sort of court hearing. Is a violation of the proprieties, so much so that a times it comes very near to scandal. If that is allrthey can orlnr against the judge of the Cleveland county court, the people who want the laws justly and fairly adminis tered—which is the great majority —should rally in his behalf and sec that he is triumpVntly re-elected. The Star Is of the opinion that they will. Certainly the sort of man de scribed Is the sort of man that all lovers of justice and fair play should want to preside over their courts, to Cleveland not only but in every other county. But the trouble is that the mass of the people who want fair play don't generally con trol In these matters. They are In different, unless they are aroused. It is the interested, the attorneys who want to be.In position to take care of their clients, and the law less and the near lawless who are often most active. They want a judge who will, respond, a judge they can control—one they can take to one side and talk to as they would not think of talking in the court to the open. In some instances political considerations appear in courts. Especially Is there danger of this to the county courts, where the judge is a local man. Party workers must be taken cate of; obligaUoiu. must be established for political purposes. Persons with a suspended judgment hanging over them, or Who believe that political leaders have sufficient court influence to shield them, have a great advan tage where the judge is amenable to the pleas of persons who arc looking out for political interest to connection with court Judgments. Prom this viewpoint these equnty courts, valuable as they may be, have in them possibilities of mis carriages of Justice that are near scandalous, if not altogether that. The superior court judge, being higher placed, having more dignity to maintain, can’t be approached as one of the boys except to rare in stances. Hawlew-Smooth Piracy. Snow HU1 Square Deal. The word “tariff” comes from Tarifa, the African seaport where the Algerian pirates made theix headquarters, and from whic.i tncy sallied forth to levy tribute on pass ing merchantmen.
