The snow prevented peo ple from visiting as they wished. Hie snow and Ice were so hard that people could not rabbit hunt suc cessfully. Mr. and Mrs. George Borders and family and Miss Kathleen King spent last week-end In Lawndale at the home of Mr. George Hord. Rev. and Mrs. Ivan L. Roberts are spending a few days with his par ents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Roberts. Mr. Max Roberts, the young son cf Mr. Solon Roberts la slowly re covering from a case of typhoid fever. Miss Edith Allen entertained a number of friends with a pound party last Thursday evening. Ail present reported a fine time. Misses Pauline and Geneva Hen dricks, Hgrrlet and Mabel Roberts, Messrs. Gilbert Hord. Lawrence Roberts, Jim Hopper and Billie Hendrick attended a party Tues day night given at the home of Miss Anne Warhck at Bel wood. Mr. L H. HOUSTON WILL SPEND 56 MILLIONS IN 19S0 Houston, Tex.—More than $56, 000,000 will be expended on develop ment activities In Houston during 1930, it was estimated by the cham ber of commerce. These improvements • include municipal expenditures and work on the Houston ship cannel. it was pointed out. One of the principal figures in the program for next year will be the Southern Pacific tunnel approach, the widening and extension of streets, water mains and ia new elty hall. Improvements outlined for the ensuing year by the Houston inde pendent school district entail an expenditure of more than $3,000,300 as compared with $3,171,856 during the year 1939. The ship channel district during 1939 cost, for new building and en largements, approximately $$6,000, 000. Next year the amount to be spent on improvements has been estimated at $30,000,000. Increase in the expenditure for general construction work in the city during 1930 over that of 1939 is seen in the chamber of commerce forecast Last year $28,350,000 a as spent, and next year it is believed $30,000,000 will be used. Total amount of money expend ed in Houston during the last ele ven months for development activi ties equals $65,365,083 the'chamber of commerce report indicates. One On The Baxter. New car shipments have been go ing out to dealers for the past ten days, with deliveries to owners sche duled to start today. The ears went cm display Saturday morning In thousands of Chevrolet showrooms from oosst to coast, while at the same time the announcement of the new car was being broadcast through the advertising columns of more than 6,500 newspapers. Scores of distinct improvements have been made in the 1930 Chev rolet line, the factory announces. Greater beauty, added safety fac tors. Improved riding comfort and better all-round performance with added power, and faster acceleration are announced as features of the new line. Larger tires, small wheels, Oelco Lovejoy hydraulic shock absorbers at all four wheels, Fisher slanting non-glare W windshield and vastly Improved four wheel braking system are some of the' highlights. Brakes are of the Internal expand ing "articulated shoe type” both front and rear, those cm the front wheels having two shoes while those on the rear have four. These brakes, also, are fully enclosed giving per fect protection against water and dirt. The brakes represent an Innova tion not only In the Chevrolet line but in the entire passenger car Held. The length of service that these linings give In the new design Chevrolet brakes Is second to none. The brakes may be adjusted without the removal of any plates from the brake drum and operate with equal efficiency on all four wheels. The brake drums are 11 1*3 Inches In diameter. The emergency brake Is an Independent unit operating on the rear drums. A new method of construction known as the "articu lated shoe type” assures uniform braking under all conditions of tem perature. Tests at the General Mo tors proving ground show that the new brake will stop a car traveling thirty miles per hour in two and two-tenth seconds within 48 feet. The attractive new closed bodies.
