Opening OfBiltmore House Will
Reveal World Renowned Gardens
(Special to The Btar.i
Asheville, Feb. 24.—Rivaling the
famed Magnolia gardens in beauty,
and offering to the beholder a con
tinuous succession of colorful
masses of flowers, through the
spring, summer and autumnal
months, the gardens of Biltmore
House will be one of the popular
points of interest for visitors in
Asheville this year. The gardens
and the mansion itself will be open
ed to visitors on and after March
15.
Vast sums of money were expend
ed by the late George W. Vander
bilt both in the construction of
Biltmore House and in the beauti
fying of its interior and the grounds
which surround it. The mansion
covering over four acres of ground
and containing in its huge rooms,
many priceless art treasures will be
a center of attraction. The gardens
are also expected to attract much
attention.
Over 300 acres of land in the vi
cinity of Biltmore Mansion have
been landscaped and many acres
surrounding the house have been
intensively cultivated for floral
beauty. The gardens include sec
tions designed on the Italian style,
an area devoted to shrubbery, a
wall rose garden, green house, a
garden devoted to herbaceous
plants, a tea garden and a seem
ingly endless maze of attractive
walks.
Lillies of a myriad varieties will
be displayed during the summer
months in the large pools of the
Italian section. Shrubs bloom
through out the spring and sum
mer in the areas devoted to them
and along the walks through the
grounds. The rose gardens are par
ticularly notable for the large num
ber of varieties.
During May and June the
grounds present a gorgeous display
with the bloom of the rhododen
dron, mountain laurel and azalea.
Many rare varieties of plants were
collected from all parts of the
world when the gardens were first
established and today the grounds
of the mansion are of interest to
botanists as well as to lovers of
floral beauty.

Why Not A new High
School Building For
Shelby, Says Mr. Loy
“Best Town In The State,” Yet
Sadly Lacking In Matter Of
School Facilities.
To Editor of The Star:
When. one looks around over this
great state of ours and sees the
many beautiful school buildings .
In towns, cities and rural districts,
many of them costing hundreds of
thousands of dollars, and then re
turns to what we are pleased to
call ‘‘the best town in the state" he
cannot help but have something oi
the same feeling the Jews had when
they arrived at Jerusalem after
their return from the captivity . . .
As a patron of the Shelby high
school, I feel that we are cheating
our children out of something they
are entitled to. Now-, I would in no
way reflect upon our superintend
ent or principal or their instructors.
They are simply trying to do the
Impossible.
Not one of the eight or more ru

high school in Shelby. This is not
news, but a fact only too w’ell
known. What shall we do about
It?
When one mentions the matter
of issuing bonds these days, he is

CHURCH BELLS ODD PENCHANT
OF MISSOURI • HAS. THIEVES
Kansu City, Mo.—Unless some
one puts a stop to the activities of
church bell thieves this part of the
country Is going to wake up some
Sunday morning and listen In vain
for the familiar call to worship.
Two weeks ago a church bell
weighing 500 pounds was found at
Third street and Grand avenue.
Residents In the vicinity Mid they
heard It fall off a truck about 3
o’clock In the morning.
Certainly, police said, no one
would be out with a church bell
that early If something were not
amiss.
Now they have evidence that not
only this bell, but others as well,
were stolen. The latest report came
In a letter from the Methodist
church at Harrisvllle, Mo., request
Ing the police to be on the lookout
for its bell. In addition the Salem
Methodist church at St Louis, the
Blue Springs (Mo.) Christian
church and the Cedar Vale (Kan.)
Methodist church have reported
missing bells.
About 378 million pennies aero
minted in the United States last
