Greensboro.—Foreigners visiting the United States are wont to re mark upon the number of luxuries Americans consume and which have, In some cases, become necessi ties, except In time of war. Among the latter class the most outstand ing is candy. The last census of candy con sumption in this country is for the year 1928 and It is claimed that the business of manufacturing is grow ing rapidly to keep up with the in creasing demand. Figures for the United States and for North Caro lina are interesting. It appears from the tabulation of the statisticians, that the per cap - ita consumption in the Unitel States, two years ago, was 11.56 pounds. In North Carolina the con sumption was a little over 4 1-2 pounds under the gross average the state consuming 6.95 pounds per person. North Carolina ranked 15th In the amount of consumption by states, with New York leading and Penn sylvania second. One of the astoa ishing figures in the tabulation was that of Arizona where the very small population consumed over 14 pounds per person average, i The cost of candy consumed in North Carolina year before last was I low per person, averaging but $1.33, The total amount, however, would have paved a long stretch of high way or would have built another | Jefferson Standard building and four 14 story hotels. The amount shown in total, from 80 per cent of the manufacturers, was $5,363,990 The cost of transportation must have been a significant amount, as most of the . candy was shipped in from other states and the total weight was a few pounds over 10 - 210 tons, or about the same weight as a ship that Was christened upon its launching recently in England. It was seen, from the tabulat'd figures, that an increase in tne candy manufacturing business in North Carolina is strongly indicat ed. The amount shipped into the state was 95.56 per cent of the amount consumed, leaving but 4.41 per cent of home manufactured products. North Carolinians are extremely “STAINOFF Why have dark, discolored teeth when "STAINOFF” will lnslantl> brinj them back to their natural color and beauty? It would seem that in the manufacture of candy lor home consumption there is still much to be desired before it can be put on a basis with other made In Carolina products. In these days of unemployment there Is no doubt a slackening in the sale of candy as In all other non-essentials but If the candy, or a large part of the candy that is consumed In this state were mad* at home. It would serve a double purpose; offer employment when It is most needed and keep within the stato an amount of money that is of noticeable Importance In any in ■ dustry. The Flower Garden.
