Highway Patrol Gets Many During Month £48 Arrests Made, And Over $15,000 ! In Fine*. 647 Motorists Given Assistance. Raleigh.—Persona, who,, because they seldom see, a member of the state highway patrol, think it is in active should sec the monthly report for March, which shows that more than 10,000 cars were stopped and 248 arrests made for offenses rang ing from drunken driving to park ing on the highway. As a result of its activities the state treasury was enriched over 115,000 from collections for differ ences in licenses and fines. While covering a total of 93,000 miles the 37 patrolmen stopped 399 cars for passing on curves and warned 352 for hogging the road. Warnings were given for 1,660 for parking on the road and 203 for hearse driving. Attention was giv en 35 overloaded trucks and 150 drivers were stormed for nasslna on mils. Improper licenses in 199 cases and no licenses in 481 netted a re venue of $10,000 while 246 arrests yielded $8,040 in the firies and costs: plus 61 months jail sentences. Only 38 arrests were made for drunken ness and 33 for reckless driving. Courtesies such as helping to fix tires, getting gas and calling help were extended to 674 motorists. In Brattleboro, Vt„. a leg-sore tramp crossing the Vermont line top chased him over the line into New Hampshire, explaining that the local jail was all full. In Manhattan C. V. Wal den, veteran of a thousand snow/ trails, who went down to Antarctica as chief doc driver of the Bjrrd expedition came hone on the Ice-scarred whaler C. A. Larsen. Sixty-eight dogs came back with him—heroes, their Job well done. But Chinook their undisputed king when they 'Sailed from Nor folk a year and a half ago—Chi cot* who always slept at the foot of bis master’s bed—was not among them. And Chinook's master will never return to Anarctlca. Standing on the top deck of the whaler, his handsome, shaggy charg es frisking about him, the wiry lit tle grey-hatred Walden, who was driving dog teams in Alaska before the gold rush of '98, paid his tribute to Chinook.
