Try Star Wants Ads Prison Fire Brought Home To N. Caroline Asheville Citlaen. While the horror of the Ohio pen itentiary lire, with ita dreadful toll of 311 convict* burned to death, la fresh In our minds, Governor Gard ner and Superintendent George Rose Pon are telling the people of North Carolina that what happen ed at Columbus Monday night could •telly happen at North Carolina's central prison in Raleigh at any time. Mr. Pou goee Into detail* to show that the central prison at Raleigh, begun In 1869, la, because of He in terior construction, "little short of a fire trap.” Effort* have been made to provide such protection against fire as Is practicable but the cost of making an old building Ilka 'this fireproof would ba an utterly un economical expenditure of money. What North Carolina • urgently needs Is a new and modern prison GETTING RESULTS DOES STAR ADVERTISING CLICK? GET THESE TWO REPORTS: The Smoke House. a cigar, drink and foun tain shop in the Bank Building decided recently to change its name. Two advertisements were in serted in The Star, calling attention to the fact that the name of a store in 8helby would here after be known as “Jolley’s.” The former name of the store was not given in the advertisement. t But each and every one who dipped the adver* ' tisement and took it to the right store, the store to be known in the future as Jolley’s—a block oi ice cream would be given free. Mr. Jolley had to redeem 251 advertisements dipped from The Star. GETS 93 NAMES And this one from a Kings Mountain woman, Mrs. W, 8. StyTes. Mrs. Styres has been ap pointed by the Kings Mountain Battle Celebra tion committee to secure the names of people in this section of the two Carolines who were bom fifty years ago this year. One notice was insert ed in The Star, calling for those names and here is what Mrs. Styres write#: *1 thank you very much for the courtesy In printing my request. It has proven wonderful results. So far, I have received 93 names and am looking for many more written in a short time. I am sure these names came to me as a result of the notice in The Star and I am very grateful to you for the wonderful attitude shown in helping in this cause.” 5,000 HOMES RECEIVE THE STAR . EVERY OTHER DAY. 20,000 PEOPLE READ IT. plant to house those whom tt has In its sovereign capacity deprived of their liberties. Mr. Pou figures it out that the money spent for a new pri son would virtually pay for Itself. But that is not the compelling argu ment. The state should modernise its prison accommodations because it has no moral right to house con victs under the conditions which it is now housing them under. The fact that the present prison U a Ore trap is only one of the eounta against It. A modern prison, as Mr. Pou urges, should afford means for the segregation of the prisoners, separating the confirmed criminals from the first offenders, the older prisoners from the boys, the prison ers suffering from communicable diseases from those who are free of these diseases, and so on. North Carolina is not the only state in which the prison system is antiquated and vicious. Similar conditions obtain all over the coun try but wherever th«y obtain their existence is a shams on the civili zation or those who lad to provide a remedy. It was the public’s toler ation ot conditions of this charac ter which superintendent Venter of Transylvania county bad in mind when, at Charlotte the other day, he exploded his bombshell to the effect, that education is overdone as com pared to ths emphasis put on the promotion of the general welfare. .. make your wishes COM E TRU E / ■j * ■ - .» ' ■ ,t «■*>-#& - i M BEGINNING life together, you are certain to harbor many mutual an golden hopes; you look forward to wealth, a home, a car, a radio, trav el, summer holidays.
