It is naduated in thirds and quarters, i nd may be purchased at. most dime stores. Now for control measures for the more important pests: Mexican Bean Beetle. . Cox, a well-known professional nurse, of Burn side, Ky., writes: "1 was in very uuu ji t*a j in, ana omy weighed 110 pounds. I read in tne papers about Cardui, and thought I would give it a try-out After 1 had taken one bottle, I could see that 1 was improving. Aftar I had taken it a month or two, I began to gain, and I weigh at present 16S, and have weighed that for some time. I am now 65 years old, and can do as much work as the aver age middle-aged woman can. "I would advise any woman, who is weakly and in a run-down condition, to try Cardui. but not to ex pect one bottle to make her well. I take two or three bottles a year, now, and I feel fine.” CARDUI USED BY WOMEN FOR OVER 50 YEARS Take Tiled ford’s Black-Draught fur Cucsllratlon, Indigestion, and Billnusn, to 3 gallons. Magnesium arsenate may be used In dust form by mix ing 1 pound with 3 pounds of hy drated lime. Spraying gives better results than dusting. Begin the ap plications as soon as the adult beetles become numerous and repeat every week or ten days, or as often as necessary. Colorado Potato Beetle Spray or dust with calcium ar senate or lead arsenate. For spray ing use 2 pounds to 50 gallons of water or 2 ounces (2-3 cAp) to 3 gallons, If used in dust form, mix 1 1-2 pounds with 8 1-2 pounds of hydrated lime. Cabbage Worm. Use same materials and strengths recommended for the potato beetle. Calcium caseinate spreader at the rate of two level tablespoons to 3 gallons will help to make the spray stick to the smooth cabbage leaves. Cucumber Beetle Apply a poison Bordeaux dust as soon as the plants are up and re peat if necessary in a week or ten days. Harlequin Cabage Bug. Sometimes called "terrapin bug" and "Lincoln bug.” To control it, spray while the bugs are young with a soap solution made by dissolving 1 pound of soap in a gallon or two of boiling water and diluting to r. ake 6 gallons. White soaps give bet ter results than fish oil soaps or yellow laundry soaps. Flake or beaded soap may be used If desired. Two cups of flake or beaded soap ture. Soap sprays should be applied before they become cold enough to gel. The bugs must be hit with the spray material. Plant Lice. Spray or dust with nicotine sul phate (Black leaf 40) or use a com mericial prepared pyrethrum spray. Nicotine sulphate may be used in small amounts at the rate of 1 table spoon to 3 gallons of water. By add ing 1 cup of flake or beaded soap, the material w'ill be more effective. Commercially prepared nicotine dusts are obtainable from dealers. If pyrethrum sprays are used they should be diluted according to the strength recommended by the man ufacturer. We Should Plant Ir. May. Snap beans, Lima beans, beets, sweet corn, carrots, cucumbers, can taloupe, watermelon, okra, parsley, parsnips, peas, endive, pepper, rad ish, salsify, squash. Transplant tomatoes, eggplant, pepper, celery, sweet potato plants. Cultivate the garden often to re tain the moisture. Y.—The women folk of this peaceful town are determin ed it shall not become another Gret na Green. Aroused by the increasing popu larity of Harrison as a place for early morning marriages, the Har rison woman's club has adopted a resolution calling upon the legisla ture to enact an amendment to the state marriage ,law providing for an adequate resident time limit. The women assert the town’s civ ic reputation has suffered by the influx of men and women seeking to be married hastily and at unus ual hours. These early morning wed dings, they declare, are disgraceful, disrespectful to married life in gen eral and an evil influence upon the youth of Harrison. The early morning marriage bus iness shifted to Harrison some time ago when eloping and other couples bent on hasty marriages found the town clerk and the community’s two Justices of the peace not ad verse to being aroused at almost any hour of the night to perforin a ceremony. For almost a decade Greenwich, Conn., was the popular Gretna Green but passage of a law requir ing that five days must lapse be tween the issuance of a license and marriage sent couples to Rye and Port Chester, N. Y. Apparently tir ing of having their rest disturbed, the authorities at Rye and Port Chester decreed that no more mar riage licenses would be issued after midnight and the mantle of Gretna Green thus descended upon Harri son.
