An enterprising newspaper reporter found her in company with an un divorced garage mechanic at Waynesboro, Va., and fetched her back to face the music. In a sign ed statement Miss McClenny says she went with Dickinson of her own free will, knowing at the time he had a wife and child. If we wished to draw a moral form all the tales which have b#n adorning the front page since Miss McClenny’s family put out the re port that she had been abducted, it would be that prominent young women who have reached the age of 20 years are no longer abducted; but we find nothing interesting in searching for dirt. The thing which not only interests but in a sense comforts is the fact that Miss Mc Clenny accepts her full share of the consequences. We would not for one moment contend that 20-year-old girls should make a practice of disapr pearing in company with slightly older married men. It isn't alto gether safe, and it rather jars on our late-Victorian sensibilities; but we hail with sincere satisfaction the readiness with which present day feminine youth demands the right to travel under its own pow ers. A dozen or so years since Miss McClenny's statement would have been unthinkable. The old-fash ioned girls who took a chance were always “over-persuaded.” Their male companions in adventure were all of them “seducers” and fiends in human form. With the emanci pation of woman has come a change. It has always been admit ted by some that two are required for each bargain; there now is a willingness to concede that It is possible for both parties to enter willingly into a compact which cheats them collectively and indi vidually. This is not a romance which is being brought to an end by the re turn of the girl to her home and the holding of the man for trial. It is a piece of folly, which both will rue and which all right-mind ed people must regret. Its sordidity, however, is somewhat relieved by the honesty of the woman in the case. Was She Shocked? The prim old maid was dining one evening, and while the waiter was standing by the table she asked him to find out the title of the piece the orchestra was playing. Other duties claimed the waiter for a time and when he returned the woman had completely forgot ten her request.
