CLYDE R HOEY Trustee 41 -July JOf WIT TO DO FOB POISON SHE BITS . , Numerous Venomous Snakes In North Carolina. Sportsman | Tells Remedy. ■ _ .("By Marlowe In Greensboro. News)) North Carolina has Its share of, venomous snakes in addition to the i harmless kinds that serve a pur- j pose. Most of us fear snakes and a j timely discussion of the matter at I this time is important, for many j well Informed sportsmen are in the, woods with no clear idea on the j subject in addition to thousands of j neophltes who know nothing at all about it. Carlos Avery, president of the, American Game Protection associa- j tion. prepared the following article! for general distribution. North Car olina is Included in the sweep for We | have rattlers and all kinds of wa ter moccasins, being capable of caus ing death. I hope this piece will be read and passed about where sportsmen: gather so that all may read and learn. If you are bitten by a venomous snake don’t run or get overheated, excited or take alcoholic stimu lants for either of these conditions speed up the blood stream and dis tribute the poison much quicker throughout the system, lessening your chance of life. Apply first aid measures, bleeding and suction of the fang wounds, and get a doctor to as soon as possible.” Thus Carlos Avery, president of the American Game Protective as- ■ sociation, epitomizes advice gath- j ered from many sources, in an ef-, fort to reduce the danger of snake, bite. More than 1.000 cases of -en-l omous snake bite were reported last j vacation season. More are expected j this season because of the increase in numbers that take their vaoa- j tions in the outdoors and also a marked increase in the number ol venomous snakes, attributed to ln j crease in agriculture. which favors snakes. I Venomous snakes of the United States are the rattlesnake, the cop perhead, the cottonmouth or water j moccasin, and coral snakes. These snakes and their sub-species range in practically every state; only Maine, New Hampshire and Ver mont are nearly or quite free oi them. Contrary- to belief, venomous snakes range where poulation is thickest. The rattlers and copper heads are notoriously thick in five of the most densely populated stat es, New York, New Jersey, Connec ticut^ Massachusetts and Pennsyl vania, according to Dr. Raymond L, Ditmars, recognized as one of the greatest authorities on snakes. Wa ter moccasins inhabit the entire south, living principally along along streams and swamps; the cor al snakes are southerners by choice Copperheads range in the eastern, southern and southwestern states; and the rattlesnakes cover practi cally the entire country. "Most snake bites are on arms or legs," Mr. Avery says a survey of treated cases show. “And because of this a lone person can usually administer first aid to himself. This should consist of applying a ligature or tourniquet a few inches above the bite; most any strong cloth will door i^en a shoelace. Do not apply it too tightly, but firmly enough to retard circulation returning through the veins toward the heart. The tourniquet should be released every 10 or 15 minutes for about a min ute, else gangrene may set in. "A cross cut incision should be made at each fang mark. Use a clean knife or razor blade and cut all the way through the skin about one fourth Inch deep and one inch long. Some of the venom will es cape with the induced bleeding. Then apply strong suction to these incisions. Many sportsmen now car carry air ordinary breast pump that can be bought at any drug store for a few cents; if the mouth is used there is danger ' of repoisoning through bad teeth or raw places in gums or walls of the mouth. With either method suction should be kept Up for 20 minut-r of each hour Tor 15 continuous hours or until swelling ceases. In any event, get r doctor as soon as possible. "Other advice given is not to take any alcoholic stimulants because al cohol increases circulation, and dis tTibytes the poison much more rap idly. Many authorities now con demn an old method, That of In jecting potasium permnaganate, which is now said to be of now value as an antidote, and don’t for your sake, depend on snake bite “cures’’ or home remedies; most are found ed upon fiction or superstitions. "Remember these are only first aid measures and recommended as such: play safe and get a doctor as soon as passible,” Mr, Avery em phasises in conclusion It is none of our busir.es* out here, but it seems that the main tenance of that New Jersey Anti Saloon League office would be class ed as a non-profitable enterprise.~ The Terre Haute Star.
