Ill, Feb. 13.—One hundred ami twenty-two years ago yesterday a boy was born In the j backwoods of Kentucky. No particu I lar importance was attached to hi* coming, but today, the anniversary of his birth, an entire nation paid tribute to the memory of the most famous backwoods rail splitter of them all. In the schools, memorial halls, and other places throughout the length and breadth of the country, Americans talked again Of "Honest Abe" and listened as other extolled the virtues of America's Civil War president. Springfield, focal point for exercises honoring Abraham Lincoln’s memory because he lies burled here, heard him described ns a world figure who had "taught les sons which mankind, whether east or west, must take to heart." ' • \ Pleads For Ideals. The speaker was Kaisujl Debuchi, the Japanese ambassador, who plead ed last night for a return to the Ideals of Abraham Lincoln. "The nations;" said the ambassa dor, "are now becoming more and more interdependent. We can con ceive of a few problems, which, though apparently domestic and generally so Called, do not produce direct or indirect effect upon all na tions. In such a world society no nation, however powerful, however self-sufficient, can be independent of other nations and Indifferent to their weal or woe. Today Lincoln's Idealism cries for rescue as it did when Lincoln saw in America a house divided against itself. In say tug this I do not refer to any speci fic epuntry—rather I have in mind all countries in the world."
