Tarn* In Victory For
Local*.
Extra inning baaeball game*
are getting to be a habit in the
city park here. Yetterday the
Shelby highs eked out a 3 to 4
victory over Rutherfordton In
the Ilth Inning.
Last week the Morrtsmen man
aged to defeat Lowell by one run In
the lith Inning.
In yesterday's contest the Shelby
outfit looked good only at Intervals
In being forced into extra frames to
defeat a team that seemed consid
erably weaker. The Shelby beta
were not working and had it not
been for a timely blow In the ninth
by Johnny Corbett, a pinch-hitter,
it would have been Rutherfordton'*
game.
With the visitors one run ahead
Corbett, who went Into rightfleld for
Barrett, shot a single over second
base to score the tying run. The
game rocked along until the eleventh
when Corbett featured in the win
ning run when his Infield roller was
tossed wildly to first enabling a
Shelby runner to score from third
Peters hurled the entire game for
Shelby and appeared to be In better
form than in earlier appearances
this year, although bobbles by his
supporting cast pulled him Into sev
eral holes:
Carter Improves.
Outstanding features for the
Shelby team were contributed by
Carter, catcher, and Devine, fleet
third Backer. Carter, who Is working
hte first year behind the bat, found
4>la throwing arm and tossed out
five Rutherfordton runners at sec
ond base and would have Had
another except, for the failure of
Jdayhew to touch the runner. De
vine's fielding, hitting and base
running featured In practically all
of the Shelby scoring. Phllbeck was
also a batting star with two safeties.
Lipscomb, husky Rutherfordton
short stop, was the all-round star
of the contest. His fielding arid
throwing reminded local fans of
Cline Lee on short, while It was his
homer with a man on base that sent
the visitors two runs ahead near
the end of the regular game.
