Too Many Kentucky | Colonels In Nation Over-Supply Hu Followed Appoint ment Of 1,000 In 25 Years. Frankford. Ky.—Mass production of Kentucky colonels In the last four years has created an over-sup ply. It Is estimated there arc enough of them now to officer an army of 3,000 000. So there's a move afoot to have the governor hand out his commis sions more sparingly. An organiza tion to be known as the Kentucky Colonel's association plans to take out Incorporation papers, adopt In signia and formulate a code of ethics for the colonels. Recent administrations have been generous with their commissions, but Oov. Flem D. Sampson has broken all records In his three and a half years in office by commis sioning 589 men, women and child ren as colonels on his staff. Has 3t Colonels. Lieutenant - Oovemor James Breathitt, jr., has 36 colonels on his staff, appointed when the governor of opposite politics, was out of the state. • Then E. C. Walker, president pro tern, of the senate, appointed 19 colonels one day when both the gov ernor and lieutenant-governor were out of Kentucky. It is estimated that 1,000 colonels have been appointed in the past 25 years. Governor Sampson also has ap pointed enough admirals to direct 15 fleets. His “navy,” like hla "army" is all officers. In addition to 15 ad mirals he has one rear admiral, three commodores and one colonel of marines. Practically every stream In the state has an admiral and some of them were left high and dry by last year’s drought. Review Custom. The Kentucky Colonels associa tion hopes to revive an old custom of giving colonels’ commissions only Dun Cspld over the week-end sear ed a knockout on Attorney Horace Kennedy (above), who when he first became recorder was one of the youngest judges In North Carolina. He was married to Miss Vera Mull, daughter of Mr. J. Cullen Mull, at Gaffney, S. C., Saturday night. In recognition of outstanding pub lic service, dither for the common wealth or for the nation. Some of the colonels are Mrs. Ruth Hanna McCormick, congress woman from Illinois; Clarence D. Chamberlin, transatlantic flier; Graham McNamee, r%dio announc er; and Be be Daniels, film star. •W. S. Gilbreath, executive vice president of the Detroit Automobile 'telub, was designated a colonel in recognition of his activity in behalf of good roads, particularly the Dixie highway through Kentucky.
