Cleve Ex-Kaiser One Of Europe’s Richest Europe, hwd-pressed by wide ipread Industrial depression, eaa itill display a considerable number >f millionaires and multi-milllon ilres, according to a survey recently made. The exiled ex-Kalser Wllhelmn, living In Holland, remains the rich est German, and Is believed to be richer than before the war. His fortune Is variously estimated at from *37,000,000 to *03,000,000. The Krupp fortune has largely vanished but two steel magnates stand out among German’s richest men. They ye Herr Flick, director of 15 enterprises, and Herr Fritz Thyssen, dominant In the Ruhr Iron Industry. Quite a different Industry Is re sponsible for the fortune of Fran cois Coty, who takes precedent over the motor-car manufacturers, Andre Citroen and Renault, as the richest man In France. Coty made his mon ey from scent and face powder. Forty years ago, Coty, as a boy of 18, newly arrived In France from Corsica, found in a Riverla chem ist’s shop a perfume of rare beauty. He obtained the recipe, took it to Paris, and hawked the perfume from door to door. Today he Is a financial and po litical power in the land, smd Is re puted to have made more than *50, 000,000 from perfumes and powder and has given more than *5,000,000 to charity.—Union Republican. Time Corrected As It Bec'ofnes Wrong How Is time obtained? The earth itself Is the fundamental clock, ro tating once a day on its axis. But It Is slowing down due to a friction of the tide, astronomers say, and the days are steadily becoming longer. Furthermore, the earth is running irregularly, as Indicated by shifts in our views of the moon. This is said to be due to expansions or con tractions of the whole earth, or to shifts in the inner strata Due to these irregularities of the earth, earth time l- not Correct, and the error is calculated by observa tion of the time when certain stars reach a point due north or south, or when the moon passes before ^trs and permits comparison with the spot the moon should have occu pied at a given time. These correc tions are made on the Naval Ob servatory transmission clock prior to its sending the noon time beats, which the Western Union network distributes to the nation. A vital role in this distribution of time over the wire network is play ed by two greater master clocks and ether recently Invented apparatus placed in operation last week in a vault beneath the Western Union headquarters building in New York City, The two clocks are mounted on massive concrete pillars, but the four legs of each "float” on concealed springs which absorb any tremors of the earth. Each of the pendulums contains thirty pounds of mercury. The temperature of the vault is automatically controlled. It will be necessary but rarely to open the vault doors and disturb the air within or to open the clocks be cause the clocks are kept In per fect synchronisation with the time of the Naval Observatory by re mote control. On an upper floor of the building, the beat of the sec onds by these clocks and by those at Washington are recorded by a chronometer side by side in detail on a moving tape. The slightly de viation from the Naval Observatory lime is Immediately* corrected by use of a switch, If 'any difference appears. An important feature of the new ly invented apparatus is a device which automatically flashes a sig nal each hour simultaneously over a large number of circuits controlling thousands of clocks. Another Inven tion is a machine which automati cally tests each of these circuits and prints on a tape the identify ing number of any circuit requiring attention. The synchronizing Impulse may go to fire or police headquartrers. the sidewalk or Itore window clock, or the factory, or it may sound the gongs at the local school, but prac tically everywhere we go and what ever we do, we may be sure of find ing at our elbow Western Union time, identical to the Instant with that at every other point in the country. .....
