Bow man Coal Co., phone 601- at 8c Hickory To Play Here Thursday Cloth Mill Club Cannot B* Boat In First Half. Could Bo Ttr<L The nest to the last fame of the, first half of Ihe Western C arolina league season will be plaved In Shelby Thursday afternoon with the Hickory club furnishing Ihe opposition for Manager Hornsby's Cleveland Cloth Mill outfit. By wining the Fourth of July game, seven wins out of eight starts, the Shelby club has the first half pennant pretty well locked up. The local team cannot lav as Brook ford and Newton, tied for second place, are two games behind. Brook ford or Newton, however, could tie the Clothmillers should either of those clubs win both of the first half remaining games while Shelby club lose both. Standing Changed Games in the loop last week Jum bled the previous standing some what. Prior to that time Rhodhlss was tied with Shelby for first place and then dropped to second place. Newton, In the meantime, was near the bottom. While Shelby took Rhodhlss in for two defeats both Newton and Brookford started win ning spurts and are now tied for second place with five games won j and three last. Rhodhlss has drop- i ped to an even .500. winning four and losing the same number. Marl on and Hickory are battling to shove each other out of the cellar. Marion having won only one game remains at the bottom of the heap but Hickory Is only one game higher. Should Shelby beat Hickory1 here Thursday and Marlon get a win over Brookford the clubs would be tied for bottom place. To Revamp Teams The • beginning of the second half next week will likely see several of the weaker clubs strengthened. This cannot be done earlier as the regu lations force each club to finish the first half with the players whose names were turned in at the begin ning of the season. Very few changes are In prospect for the Cloth Mill club as fans believe the Shelby outfit can hold Its own pretty well In the second half with the other clubs strengthened. There Is a possibility, however that the club here will add a player or two for the second heat of the loop race. Reports have It that either Hal Farris or Casey Morris may join the receiving staff and the Infield may be braced. It was hop ed that Cline Owens Lee could Join the team as he is on the eligible list, but Cloth Mill officials cannot get a rise out of the star inflelder, sure hitter, and clever thinker. With Lee at short, Nig Lipscomb on third, Cricket Weathers and Tommy Kerr at second, and the sensational Oil- i reath on first the Shelby club would have an Infield equal to any In semi-pro or minor league balf It is a shifty inner works as It Is with Ken Mayhew doing Utility duty. Another good crowd of fans is expected to bee the game here Thursday. Attendance has been good all year with the local team setting the pace for the baby league, and with other clubs strengthened for the last half some nl-and-tuck games are In prospect.
