The agricultural department to day estimated the area under cul tivation on July 1 at 41,491,000 acres as compared with 46.078,000 last year. Till* the smallest acreage planted since 1923, is 11.8 per cent less than 1929 planting and 14.9 be low the record acreage of 1926. Private estimaters had foreseen a somewhat greater reduction, New Orleans dispatches said, and cot ton declined nearly $2.95 a bale after the government report was is sued. Carl Williams, cotton member of the Farm Board, said the reduc tion "is a good sign southern farm ers, planters, bankers, and land owners are beginning to co-operate with the Farm Board.
