Miss Isabel Hoey entertained members of the C.i.itract bridge club on Thursday afternoon at a regular meeting at her home on VV Warren street. Bridge was played at three tables and at the close of the games the high score award went to Miss Mary Adelaide Roberts an.1 the second high acore prize to Mr?. J. C. Eskridge. Ouests outside the club members were Mrs. Ben Buttle Mrs. Charles Hoey and Mrs. C. R. Hoey. jr., the latter of Canton. A salad course with coffee and sweets was served. Week Of Prayer To Be Observed The Ladies Missionary society ol the Central Methodist church will observe the Week of Prayer next week with services at the church during the first few days of the week. A meeting will be held at ths church on Monday afternooo at 3:30 with a worship program and a short business meeting. R. Morgan was a gracious hostess on Wednesday afternoon at her beautiful home on Cleveland Springs road when she entertained in honor of Mrs. William Tully. of El Paso. Texas, attractive house guest of Mrs. John Schenck Mrs Morgan received her guests in a be coming wine-colored frock, anti Mrs. Tully wore a handsome maroon afternoon dre.js with lace sleeves Bowls of fall flowers were arrang ed about, the rooms where the seven tables were placed for bridge. Aft er a number of games when scores were added Mrs. C. R. Doggett was presented with a double deck oi cards as high score prize and Mrs. Tully with a box of Imported em broidered handkerchiefs as a guest prize. Lattlmore, Oct. 29 -A wedding ot much Interest to Lattlmore and the community was that of Mr. Howard Hamrick and Miss Margarette Rey nolds. Mr Hamrick and Miss Rey nolds along with Mr. Clarence Rey nolds, brother of the bride and Misu Mary Lee Greene motored to Oaff ney Sunday and were happily mar ried. Miss Reynolds Is the daugh ter of Mr. C. C. Reynolds of this place formerly of Greenwood, S. C„ while Mr. Hamrick Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. O, Hamrick of this place also. Mr. Malcolm Wilson celebrated his birthday Sunday by inviting some of his friends to take dinner with him. Those present were' Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Double Shoals News Of Week Rain Makes Farmers Plan to sow Grain, Plan for Every-Mem ber Canvass. (Special to The Star.) Double Shoals, Oct. 29.—The fine rain that fell last night will give the farmer an opportunity to begin plowing in preparing to sow small grain. This section will sow more grain this fall and spring than in many years. Due to the sickness of the pastor. Rev. J. W. Suttle. there was no monthly conference at the Baptist church last Saturday. Rev J. V. Devenny of Lawndale supplied for the pastor on last Sunday afternoon A large crowd was present. In preparatory for the everv member canvass there will be sev eral classes in studying at the Bap tist church next week. Clay, former Hickory printer, has produced a most Inter esting book entitled "Fishing For Men la Brasil and Other Stories," which has Just come from the Chil dren’s home press at Winston Salem and sells for $1.00. Mr. Clay established a publishing house in Brazil and there he fished for fish and for men, doing a wonderful work in the cause of Christ. His stories are narrative experiences he had in the interior of the coffee country and stories related to him on good authority, bearing on the habits and customs of a people about which most of us know little Mr. Clay spent many years in Bra zil, operating a publishing house selling religious books which wil: no doubt accomplish as much good hi telling the story of the Savior as any foreign missionary. Mr. Clay is a personal friend of S. E. Hoey of Shelby and while on a visit to him this summer, was heard with a great deal of interest in Central Methodist church. At her hospitable home on East Graham street, Mrs. Ceph Blanton entertained in a most royal manner on yesterday day afternoon the membership of the Tongues and Needles and the Thursday afternoon clubs, jointly, with Miss Fiances McBrayer, Shelby's newest and most charming bride-elect as the guest of honor. A term of court convenes in Shel by, Monday, October 31 with Judge Bryson presiding. Monday and Tuesday will be given over to the trial of the criminal docket, while the civil docket will be taken uu Wednesday. Mr. Robert Crowder has plans drawn and is placing material for the erection of a handsome new bungalow home on the Cleveland Springs road just at the edge of town. Contract for the hard surface road from Shdlby to Cleveland 8prings will be let in the next 3r. days. The state highway commis sion also promised that a concrete bridge will be erected at the Spake place. This bridge will cost $35,00f or more. The first meeting of the Cleveland County High School association was held in the court house Saturday morning, October 22. Representa tives from Piedmont, Boiling Springs, Shelby. Kings Mountain.
