GAMBLE.) ivuiid Mountain. Nov. 16. Be j caujO cf a decrease in valuation of ; .uxable property and necessary ex ! pauses needed to run the town's business for the year 1931, the tax tate has been raised from $1.50 per J10O to $1.80. The assessed valuation for 1930 I was $5 361,973.00 and when the tax • bo’.-it j were completed for 1931 the total valuation dropped slightly ; under $5,140,000.00 or a decrease ci i over 5220,000.00 in taxable prop i erty. | In addition to the decrease in j property valuation other obligations ! iiad to be paid. The fiscal year for the town of Kings Mountain iiad previously ended on April 30 each year but according to the new municipal control act passed by the last general assembly the fiscal year had to be changed to June 30. The expense of running the town for these two months had to be in cluded in the town budget this year and the next two years. In addition to this amount approximately $22. 000.00 was Invested In street Im provements during the past year, which is also pro-rated over three years. * Until about six months ago tin* town of Kings Mountain had prac tically no fire department and it wa; thought necessary by the prev ious board to purchase fire equip ment and housing facilities for this equipment and to organize a fire department which was done and which added additional expense to the town. Aner completing me budget n j i was found that the actual operat-; | ing expenses for all departments of I the town would be approximately! $55,000.00 tor the current year j Added to this amount is $12,850.00 for school purpose tor the, current i year. The sum of $100,500.00 is j needed to meet the debt service und j other obligations which tali due i during the fiscal year. These three ! items total slightly over $168,000.00 i which has to be raised in 1931. Deducted from those necessary j ,d Whurs aments Is . the anticipate .h i income of approximately $56,000.00 i to the town from all sources other 1 than ad valorem * taxes. These re-! venues .include water, light, polic: and cemetery departments and bus iness licenses, etc. In addition to! this revenue there are uncollected ' taxes and street assessments car- i tied over from other years of $20,- i 000.00. These two amounts which I total $76,000,000 deducted from the j $168,000.00 which had to be raised ] leaves a net amount of $92,000.00 to j be raised from ad valorem taxes. An j increase of 30c on the $100 was needed to do this. The water department of the town operated last year at a los- ct j $28,326.73. As a result of this loss j Capt.
