CLARA DqO/ &ncr Ix?EY DEW/ VICTOR rLEHlNG KcRLEY DRURY The question one hears on all aides in Hollywood there days is "Will it last?" alluding, of course, to the marriage of Clara Bow, tempestuous star of the screen, and Rex Bell, her movie cowboy. When the film capital heard the news of the secret ceremony at Las Vegas, N. M , it at once began to speculate on how long the “tie that binds" would remained tied, recalling that the famous "It” girl is quick to begin, and as quick to end, a romance. The Brooklyn girl, who rose to stardom and one of the bigger! salaries in the movie industry, t^as been near the altar on many occasions, but this is the first time she went through with the journey. Her first romance—with Donald Keith, film hero— (he broke off after setting a wedding date, because her father warned her that marriage would interfere with her career. Then came Gilbert Roland, whom she discarded ^ecause he was jealous and resented other men's atten tions to the beautiful red-head. Victor Fleming famous director, next found a place in Clara's heart, but not for long, being supplanted by Robert Savage, ton of wealthy steel man. who attempted suicide when his adored one cooled towards him. Gary Cooper, big, silent he-man, was the next to fall victim to Cupid’s Bow, but Clara ditched Gary when she took a yen for Morley Drury, captain of the Southern California grid squad. That romance never flowered. Dr. William Earl I’earson fell under the “It" spell while Clara was a patient in a Los Angeles hospital, but he already had a wife—so finis. Then came Harry Richman, Broadway entertainer, whom La Bow almos" married and finally broke with. Bell came prominently into the Bow saga when he aided her during the Daisy De Voe trial. Says Farm Machinery Priced At Low Level Agricultural Engineer Finds Drop In Prices of Farm Machinery. The farmers dollar Is buying more in the ray of materials ar.d labor when he purchases a new farm machine than in anything else he uses at this period, suggests David S. Weaver, agricultural en gineer at State college Mr. Weaver has made a compari son of prices of machinery with other articles used on the farm and finds them priced at a lower level. rSuon equipment as corivpian»«s. ; cultivators harrows, sulky plows, , rakes and wagons are selling at a much lower pjlce level than wash ing machines, Hinges. milk gan lawn mowers and the like "It would be desirable if prices lor farm machinery and other com modities could be maintained at a price level lixed according to the price paid lor farm products but this is impossible, says Mr. Weaver. •'True it is that farm products prices have some effect on the wages paid to manufacturing farm machinery; such efforts are always slow. Wholesale prices are slow in affecting retail prices and retail prices are slow in affecting wages." Governor Is Given A Five-Cent Bond Raleigh.—Gov O Max Gardner was presented with a five-cent: bond of the State of North Caro lina issued here October 1, 1861. S. E. Mauney. now of Gainesville, Ga . but formerly of Dallas, Gaston, county, sent the "little bond" to the governor as a keepsake The five-cent paper note states on Its face tnlt the State ot North Carolina would pay face value to the bearer "on or before January 1st* 1866’’ It was signed in ink by Henry Hardie. for public treas ury.'' • Sin Is Cause Of Depression, Says This Contributor Modern Dane* anil Different Sexes Bnlhinii Together Are the Worst, Say* He iBv A. H. Humphries. H-., Shelbjrl As quite a large number of i>co ple have within the last few months expressed their views in various ways, in regard to the depression, please give me spnee in your paper to tell Its readers what I believe to be the cause and also a remedy And to start with, 1 wish to state I have no desire whatever to go on record as /i pessimist. I believe in looking at the bright side enf every thing. that llfcs a bright side to look at I believe In progress in moving on. so long as we are going In the right direction Now lor the cause We as a na tion are forgetting God. If the de pression ts world-wide. then Mils statement may be applied to the world. But 1 shall try to coniine my self principally to the United States. There is more murder, more suicide, more robbing in different ways, more divorces, more mean* ness in practically every way, with the possible exception of the -whis key evil going on in the United States to day than ever before in its history. And the Bible tells us ‘■where sin prevails, righteousness decays'’ Here are what I consider a couple of the outstanding evils of out* day and time. The modern dance, and the swimming pool, both working in harmony to the same end there har never been anything In the world to equal them, when it comes to in flaming the passion Of men and wo men to lust aTter the opposite sex. It | is mentioned several times in the Bible, especially do 1 remember in the 148th and 150th Psalms it says "praise Jehovah with the dance” No doubt, someone will say I do i not believe in bathing, but I do. '‘cleanliness Is next to Godliness.” and we ail know swimming is fine exercise. But 1 believe men mid women should have separate awim thing pools. We see male and fe j male in bathing together, lolling around on the grass together, prac i tteajly naked with a boldness and i braze nrte.ss tlmt would have blush' ed the cheek of Sodom It isn't any wonder we have so many divorces now In 1895 there were only 25,000 divorces in the i United States in 1910, there were 50,000. An Increase of only 25,000 in 15 years. But in 1920 there were one hundred sixty-five thousand, an increase that far surpassed the ! increase In population. i haven’t ! noticed any statistics for several years. But would guess It Is still oil the rise. And there isn’t any doubt In my mind but what the di vorce evil is one or the main fac-’ tors that is leading to national ruin It is undermining the morals of the people. It is destroying our homes, and when we destroy the home, we destroy the nation. It seem* we are traveling the same road that Rome traveled, and without a change, are inevitably coming to the stun*- end. We are headed lor the breakers, they are In sight and without n change in the near future it Is only a short while until we shall imie •.cached’ out destination Now tor the remedy. The s*uu Bible that tells us In no uncertain terms, about sin and Its awful con sequences. gives the remedy It points us to one. whose birthday we are hoping to celebrate the 35th day ot this month. Ami there is tlir only solution to our trouble* Pure and undeftled religion. But specia, sessions of oil the legislatures in the United States, combined with Hie entire Federal government, eould not funnel it into us. we must willingly go back where we laid down the Cross, shoulder it again and follow as near as we can in the footsteps of Jesus. Then shall this financial depression' that Is hovering over the World today be lifted. The unemployment problem solved, prosperity return, and the wheels of agriculture, Industry ‘and commerce, once again roll peace fully owword. Then, but'not ‘until then. STAR ADVS.
