Until: the last quarter of play It was aj nip-and-tuck performance, but in • the final minutes the high school: girls put on extra steam to emerge 1 with a good margin. Brown, Putnam star The game between the high qumt and the all-star boys was even closer than the 20-16 score would indicate. With two minutes to play the score was deadlocked and the final-minute caging of two goals brought the win. The high playeis were badly off in their shooting ard floor game, but the real difference in the two teams was provided by "Big Red" Brown, a star with Shel by last year. He rattled in eight points and pulled the all-stars out of several difficulties. Max Put nam, back at his old center posi tion for the highs, was their best performer. He outclassed Jim Har ris, former Lattimore and Pied mont star, and whipped in eight points to lead his team. The floor work of the Poston brothers and the guarding of Camnitz were al- o valuable to the all-stars. Playing for the Shelby high girls were A. Dellinger, Palls, G. Green Register* 29 roiuts Boys Fail To Click As Well As Girl Team. Crushing through for their ele venth consecutive win, the Polkville sextet registered g decisive victory over the Piedmont cagers last Fri day evening. The games played on the Piedmont court. proved to be unusually interesting for close guarding on the part of Piedmont held the aggressive Polkvile girls t> a 46-4 win. The outstanding player for Piedmont was Dayberrv. who exhibited a snappy bit of guard work. For Polkville, Captain Mar garet Greene held first honors with 29 points to her credit; Mode again revealed exceptional ability a guard, and F. Weathers, substitut ing in the absence of Gold, Pol’.t vllle’s star goal shooter, did note worthy work, making 8 of the re maining points. The Piedmont quint defeated the Polkville boys by a score of 24-H in a hard-fought contest. The Polk ville team failed to click in its best manner, partly because several of the members were disabled by min or injuries, consequently the Pied mont quint decidedly outplayed them. Elmore and Dayberry starrei for Piedmont, while Beam arri Champion did the best work for Polkville. This game was preceded by a tie and a win for Polkville and therefore the victor is still unde cided. I Removal of Cataract Is Painless Delaying Operation May Cause Serious Trouble, Says Dr. Copeland. By R. S. COPELAND, M. D. U. S. Senator from New York. Former Commissioner of Health, f<eto York Ctiy Recently we had a Tint from the King of Siam. It aroused much interest as to ' the importance and significance of cataract of the eye. You will re I call that the 1 brave lit t 1 • • monarch came i primarily to ; have a cataract | removed. It was ! feared he might i lose his eye j sight perma j nently and very sensibly he de ) term 1 ned to 'escape this i great calamity. I As a rule cat* ! aract is a con ! dition met in old Dr. Cfepelaat age. cm, aa >n oi tne I King of Siam, it may occur in the young. Cataract develops slowly, but ultimately causes blindness of the eye involved. Surgery is the only means of removing it- There la no known medicine fo- Its cure. Cataract is a haziness involving the crystalline lens of the eye. Tn the operation, the lens and with it the cloudiness, is removed The cause of cataract ie not vet known, but It Is believed to be due to some Interference In the nutrition of the lens of the eye. Tills interference in nutrition may bo brought about as the result of some disease. The cataract may be caused by a blow or other injury to the eye. In this type of cataract which is called • traumatic cataract," the cloudiness of the lens is duo to a rupture of the capsule of tire eye. This permits the watery fluid inside the eyeball to find its may into the lens’ sub stance. causing it to swell and be come opaque. If the rupture in the capsule is tiny, the opacity may be found only 1 in the small area or the injury. If the rupture is large, the entire lens becomes opaque and swollen. As a result of the swelling there may bo ! an increase in tension of the eye ball. rather a dangerous condition. In any such cceident the patient should be placed in bed at once and applications of ice applied to the eyelids. A physician should be sum moned immediately. Some! mes. id such a case, it Is necessary to per form an operation, and it is best to do this at once, before permanent damage is done to the eye. Occasionally cataracts are seen In young children. They are born with them These cases should bo op ; eraied upon as soon as possible so that there s ro 1 -s of the seeing power of the eye. In an adult if one eye has a cata ract and the sight of the other is good, there is no immediate hurry about operating But it is a mistake to wait too tong Of si! the serious things that can happen to tie. I regard cataract as the most satisfactory. ]r is satis factor-. because by a painless opera tion the trouble cae be speedily temored.
