Nobody’s Business By UEE McGEE . the Pros And Cons of Prohibition Hie Literary Digest poll will no! doubt show that over 65 percent jf the "straw" voters are opposed to prohibition, but that doesn't nert - sarlly mean that whiskey can he voted back Into the country. Here's the ^trouble about "straw vote: over 90 percent of the "straw voters are (no doubt) men. For possibly no known reasons, a ma jority of the men of a voting age ure opposed to prohibition, ..hut tliey don’t want open saloons. To tell the truth, they don’t know what they want—unless It is nj drlnlt 6t good booze occasionally. At leait 95 percent of the women In thp south ar« In favor of pro hibition, even In Its present form:! and over 75 percent of the womui up north and out west are In favor of prohibition, so the "straw vote may tell which way the wind Is blowing, but it wont tell anything about the various whirlwinds scat tered around. U.e Woman's Suffrage amendment. Some women drink, but very few mothers would think of permitting their sons and daughters to see them take a drink, and even tie many upsters shudder at the thought of their off-springe being Joy-fluid absorbers, isope, folks, our women nlnt in favor of whiskey coming back in any form woyse than it is already back. I do not drink—because, possi bly, I'm big enough fool sober, so why waste anything? 1 hear so much talk now-a-daya like thts "Why, everybody is drinking: whis key can be bought on any corner, anywhere, anytime.” Some of that is not so. I do not know of as many fts 2 persons out of 100, engaged in a business that brings them in con tact with the public daily that drink at, all. I do not believe that prohibition is perfect. It never will be perfect so long as crooked men and graft ing politicians have the enforce ment laws in hand. But our prohibi tion laws are enforced Just about as good as any other laws that men have charge of; I am not old, that is—not very old, but I have seen more men pig drunk on the streets In our city in one single afternoon rnd night 30 years ago than I have seen equally as drunk in all of the past 10 years put together. Drunk folks are hard to find these days— during daylight: what little drink ing they do is done at home with i he old lady and their 2 friends who fetcli the fruit jar along.
