Mull, Truatees. 4t Feb2«i Maxwell Opposed To Any Sales Tax Plan Concord Tribune Candidate Maxwell, judging by remarks he made in a 8h*ioy speech several nights ago, Is stin , much opposed to a sales tax for the federal government and for the state government. He says a feder i al sales tax would be bad enough . but that a state sales tax would be even more "obnoxious." That Is not going to do the com [ mtasloner much good down East where the people ore determined to ! free their land from all taxation at the expense pf other property. It will no doubt arouse the Ire of thae newspapers of the state which a ill take this form of taxation or any other to get land free of taxation. It will brine down upon his heart the wrath that element in the last general assembly which fought for five bitter months to put acuos' just such a tax as he describes as "obnoxious." "The people of tills country should not permit the desire to maintain the spending of the fed eral government on an extravagant basis to drive them into the adop tion of these more odious and bur densome than war taxes and to set up as the major course of federal revenue a tax that gets 80 per cent of Its revenue from people whose Incomes are less than $3,000 a —which Is what this 2 1-2 per cent general sales tax does," the com missioner said.
