Morrlsmen Play Gastonia Today. "Every one of Islielby high« championship baseball teams developed from a green outfit that appeared hopeless in early j spring practice and the first games of the season." That’s what Shelby fans a.<l saying about Casey MoVrts' kid team at the high school this year after seeing the game youngsters come from behind to score three runs In the last of the ninth for a win over Forest City. Will Win some Today the youngsicrsgpre playing Gastonia at. Oastoma. The horn0 fans will get to see them In action agpln Tuesday afternoon In tm local lot, The opposition will be furnished by fherryville and that means a good crowd and much in terest, for rivalry between In* schools has been high since back, in the days when Grier Friday and the CherryviHe team were battling some of the best teams Shelby ever produced. * uoacn Morris isn i evem uunx tng of a championship. The bo,>s he says, will develop plenty as the season wears along and they.have already developed remarkablyT The Forest City game showed that. “Can't expect anything like a championship team with only two players from last year left and the remainder mere boys.” the coa ;h says. “And you can't win cham pionships without pitchers. William.; has the making of a good hurler. but he can’t pitch em all. and thrr. what do we have? Dirk Newton to pull in from the outfield without any pitching experience. But they‘11 win some and whets they don t they’ll give the crowds entertain ment by fighting until the last out" Good Prospects A couple years <jf play should make good players ou: of several of the youngsters. Jolley, the grid ar.d cage star, is a good nltter and a coming ^rortstop although a bit shaky on not rollers. He has an arm that can make up for slight Juggles One of the most pleasing dev'i opments is that Of R K. Wilson, the young catcher who came up from the Tieglon junior team. He is a nifty receiver, lftst on his f?e‘ and has a good arm. Whitey ' Sparks, the third or fourth of the Sparks brothers to play at Shelby high Is coming along fast on first. He Is another junior legion player and. like his brothers, can hit the ball on the nose. He is not at home as yet wi' r,i his footwork around l ist but seem; to be improving. The .return of Bill Harrill to the lineup added punch to the batting order. In his first game Bill har.* mered out two triples and |mi .■ something happens should be un most consistent hitter on the team' Dick Newton can still lambast Iht ball. Several of the o'hers stand up and take real cuts a', the horsehitle and should get their nitting eye in another game or two In Blanton Morchead, Kale, Fair, and others there should be hitting power u> mid-season Park Change Helps The switching of the playing field back to, the old arrangement was a very beneflcW move. Just now the park seems-to be one of tire best high school diamonds in the section. tisewnerc Former Shelby strs are getting; in print playing elsewhere. When Carolina defeated the Durham ciur of the Piedmoht league this week “Cricket” Weathers clayed second base, banged out thus* hits and drove in a run. At Mars Hill col- ] lege the fleet little Joe Philbec; i has cinched an outfield berth and is hitting the ball. Cline Lee is be-; ing used on one of the regular in fields of the New Yo~l: Giants farnV club at Winston-Salem in the Piedmont loop.
