Raleigh. June 1.—Governor O. Max Gardner this week said the state ot North Carolina was pre pared to meet "all obligations of every character due aim payable at the end of the fiscal year June 30.’’ The governor and state treasurer, John, P. Stedman, conferred late to day following which Governor Gardner issued a statement. It said: Every requirement necessary for prompt payment of the *5,800,000 interest and principal has been ar ranged. Of the amount to be paid, *2.600.000 will be applied to the re tirement of bonds and reduction of the state debt. "The teachers’ salaries for the six months term have been paid or provided for and all obligations of every character due and payable at the end of the fiscal year June 30 will be met.” On May 25. the state issued $5,-) 000,000 in six per cent tax anticipa tion notes to replace *3,800,000 in i similar obligations maturing at that time and to provide *1,200.000 for the state treasury. This, it was said at the time, made it possible for the state to meet its obligations maturing at the i end of the fiscal year. June 30. SEABOARD Air Line Railway l ugitive Is Back After Being Gone For Over 19 Years Littleton.—Henry Gurkin fugitive from Justice for 19 years, voluntar ily surrendered to Officei Gray m Roanoke Rapids last week Saturday night, May 3. 1913 Thomas Shaw, a well known farmer and country merchant, living about 12 miles from here, wio shot down on the front porch of his home by an unknown person. Mr Shaw lived several hours but was i ever able to give a description ot . murderer. Robbery was the motive for the crime, but in his haste to get away after shooting Mr. Shaw the slayer failed to carry the money with him. Henry Gurkiii and Kici Cobb, of Roanoke Rapids, were arrested and charged with the inurdc and Jailed without bond. They were brought for trial before Judge Henry P. Love and prosecuted by Representative Kerr, at that time solicitor. At the close of the state's evidently, the jury returned a ver dict of murder in the first degree against Cobb and Gurkiii was ex onerated of all charges. Ccbb wa; sentenced to be electrocuted. He died in the chair after making a confes sion of the whole affair. He impli cated Gurkln who was again indict ed as an accessory betore the fact He gave bond and then disapcarcd Later he was declared a fugith from justice. After surrendering to Officer Cir.
